The people at Lite-On have been hinting about this drive for months. They finally released some details on it:

I will guess not for the same reason you can't turn a 1620 into a 1625 (slightly different hardware). But who knows. ;)

The LiteOn 1635S is [indirectly] availale for sale in the USA in the form of the Gigabyte 1623A at Newegg, so if someone really wants, they could get that drive and then try to somehow get a 16H5S firmware (I think that's the tricky part; OC-Freak tends to get these unreleased firmwares because of his contacts, of which I have none) and try it out. ;)

I forgot that I had an old press release for this drive. A few more details:

It will be available in both internal and external configs

They will ship in October and have an estimated retail price of $89.99 (internal) and $129.99 (external).

Has anyone heard of the SHM-165H6S? I'm guessing that's a typo.. at least for now. :D

Methinks that's LiteOn's LightScribe SuperMulti (-RAM) drive. And no, I don't think that's a typo. LiteOn has been promising DVD-RAM this year, but I doubt that the 5S series will be able to support DVD-RAM. I've been told that the DVD-RAM firmwares will need to be 2 MB in size, and the current 5S firmwares are only 1 MB in size--and already fairly cramped for space as-is. It could very well be possible that LiteOn can fit a 2 MB flash chip with the current MT1888 chipset, but I'm going to guess that they'll move up to a newer chipset revision for the DVD-RAM.

i was thinking the typo is elsewhere:
SHM-165H6S ?
SHM-165H6S ? (vs. SHW-16H5S)

Good catch. I didn't see that.

Yea, the 5 seems a little weird. But I'd guess that the SHM is probably right, though, with the M standing for Multi (vs. W = ReWriter).

And this also makes me wonder, how is this new NEC deal going to play into all this?

why Multi? what's Multi about this drive? it doesn't burn DVD-RAM.

No, not this one, but the "6S" might be.

Some manufacturer called their drives "Multi" when it burns DVD-R and +R ;)
