My first bad Verbatims ever, pretty scary actually

Hi,

I've been using 8X -R Verbs (MCC02RG20) for some time now, about 150 of them. I bought them from SVP, and only got made in Singapore or made in Taiwan Verbs from them. Always good results with these discs, not a single coaster, not TY-like quality scans but cheaper than TY and quite reliable and stable. Trouble-free operation @8X and even @12X with Benq 1620, Pioneer 109 and NEC 3540A, and @1X with JVC DR-M10 (standalone recorder).

Recently SVP stopped shipping to Belgium , and I wanted to buy some more of these Verbs, so I ordered 4 25-discs spindles from MMD (Luxembourg).

What I received are the worst discs I've ever used as yet. I don't know if it's a coincidence, but these are my first "made in India" Verbs.

These discs have visible dye defects, 3 failed to burn out of 10 I've tried (from 2 spindles), video discs stutter during playback and the Qscans are apalling.

The worst part is that after having been used to SVP's customer service, dealing with MMD has been a strange experience. They did'nt send any shipping confirmation, they take 48 hours to reply to emails, they're inconsistant in their replies, and though they accept to exchange the spindles, they don't want to refund the shipping costs for the return of the goods!! For defective discs, I think these are not fair commercial practises, no Sir! :(

I'm done with MMD, they don't seem to care at all about "small" customers. I've ordered some of these recent TYG02 Verbatims from Digitalpromo. :P

See details, pictures and quality scans of these defective Verbatims HERE.

Opinions?

I'd give you my 2 cents if you took the time to post the pictures here as well.

I have some MCC02RG20 from India and I´m disappointed about the quality. With my Benq 1640 I have mostly over 1000 PIF, which is real bad for those high-quality(?) media.

My 16x -R from Taiwan rarely have PIF over 500, mostly less than 350.

My opinion: 8x-India-media is not to recommend

MII are made by Moser Baier and MIT are made by CMC but both are made to MCC spec. I heard MII MCC is pretty good (havnt tried any myself) but i guess not.

Is it possible it's counterfeit Verbatim?

Francksoy: Have you contacted Verbatim to ask about the media? I'm sure they'd like to see your pics (It'd be nice to have them posted on HERE too  )

OK I'll post them here shortly, promise

It's very unlikely they would be fakes, the packaging looks genuine, the serials look genuine, the codes at the inner ring look genuine...

Since I posted this issue, people at CDFreaks suddenly start reporting their own experience about wild variation in quality for Made in India Verbs... I had already been warned some time ago about it, but I just dismissed it, because my experience with Verbatim up to this point had been most excellent, and I blindly trusted their quality control.

Of course I've already wrote to Verbatim Europe, but no reply yet. I've been told that it may take weeks for them to reply. :o

1. How does one of my "regular" 8X -R Verbatim disc from SVP look like
Burned @12X.

No visible dye defects, almost invisible speed switches, Good quality scan.
Image

2. MMD discs: Top disc from first spindle, Nero create data disc
Visible dye defects, very visible speed switches, bad quality scan.
Image

3. MMD discs: Bottom disc from first spindle, ISO burnt with Decrypter.

Same comments than for disc 2.

4. MMD discs: Top disc from second spindle, ISO burnt with Decrypter (failed)

Failed burn, awful dye defects, bad QS.

Hello!

Shocking! When you don´t can trust Verbatim, is TY the last company you can get good media?

Hi Scour ;)

For 8X -R DatalifePlus discs, Verbatim now outsources to... ta ta ta ta... Taiyo Yuden! Yes, not only the pastels now, but also the "average" (sic) 25-discs spindles of DatalifePlus.

I've just received 4 25-spindles of TYG02 Verbatims from DigitalPromo, the shop clearly offers the two versions (MCC 02RG20 or TYG02), nice move.

These discs behave like normal TYG02, which means, of course, that they're excellent. ;)

The "official" version is that MCC switches to 16X and can't keep on making 8X media. But considering the variation of MCC 02RG20 lately, maybe Verbatim's switch to TYG02 has to do with this variation in quality... who knows?

No company is perfect. To expect that every disc out of the millions (billions?) that come out of the factory is perfect is to expect the impossible. I do recall a case where a person contacted Taiyo Yuden about discs that had some obvious defects, and TY requested that the discs be sent back to them for replacement (and so TY could see where the mess-up occurred). MCC may wish to do the same. *shrug*

Personally, I don't think that this is a big deal. Just ask for replacements. I would be shocked if TY or MCC *never* released a bad batch of media.

Hi Francksoy ;) !

Yeah, I heeard it that some 8x is now from TY, but don´t see those media in Germany, hope it will be avaible soon.

The thing called "outsourcing" is complicated. I never saw here 8x or 16x Verbatim-media which is made by Verbatim itself (Made in Japan or Singapore), the media is from CMC, Prodisc and MBIL, but produced with Verbatim-recipe.

My info is:

8x-media is better from Taiwan
16x is better from India

I hope that Plextor or Verbatim sells TYG03 soon :)

The original blank TYG03 is avaible, but I don´t like unlabeled or printable media

You're perfectly right ;)

But there IS more variation reported with Made in India (MBI) batches of MCC 02RG20 than with other manufacturing sources of the same discs. Not enough yet (in my opinion) to draw definitive conclusions, but enough for me to investigate this incident, i.e. buying Verbatim discs (CDs, DVDs..) for years without any trouble, then buying my fist Made in India Verbs and all are defective..! :o

Of course this may be pure coincidence, er, still.... see my point? :)

[off topic]Is it you, Code64k? from "over there" ? ;) [/off topic]

Duke said "Shit happens" ;)

I don´t think that any manufacturer is perfect, but bad batches from TY seems to be more rarely like from MCC

Francksoy,

FYI, my latest batch of Verbatim media from SVP which is probably representative of the whole of the UK was:

Verbatim +R x16 Silvertop - MCC004 - India
Verbatim +R x16 Printable - MCC004 - Taiwan
Verbatim -R x8 Silvertop - TYG02 - Japan

Using my Plextor PX712A, I thought that when I started using Verbatim +R x16 Silvertop - Singapore - all my worries were over. They were the best burns I ever had. The Indian ones (I've had about 8 cakeboxes now) are consistently indifferent or poor, and write at x6 for reasonable burns. The Taiwan ones seem a little better. The -Rx8 Silvertop TYG02's I have been pretty disappointed with, considering they are TY's. Pretty good at x4, but nowhere near up to Plextor TY media.

My search for consistent high quality easily available discs at a reasonable price (Plextor TY's are not for me a reasonable cost) continues.
