Got my new drive today and I don't believe that the drive is set to Master.
The jumper is on the middle pinset, verticle. Can't find jumper setting on BenQ website There are absoluely no marking anywhere on this drive. Cheap! If I look at the drive from the rear with the connectors on the bottom,
which is master 1 2 3.
xxxxxxx xxxxxxx : : :

Thanks
Al

Actually, there should be EXTREMELY FAINT markings on a TOP edge of the Benq drive, above the jumper area...

I found them after I had already figured out the jumper layout. I saw the layout in a nicely printed PDF manual, available for download on a website - Plextor website ! Because it was a Plextor 740 manual

I didn't think there were any markings on the 1640 until I pulled out a magnifying glass, and sure enough, they are there, as oslik3 mentioned.

I can't look now because it is installed. I do remember looking with a magnifying glass and couldn't see any impressions, but I suppose my cataracts don't help either. Maybe BenQ could use a decal.
Thanks for your replies. Thanks for the reference on the manual.
