how to kill a DVDR ?

when i use a CDR to save data and then want to throw it away, i simply scratch the top surface, with a screwdriver or a pair of scissors, in a radial way from the center to the rim, removing a nice chunk of the reflective layer + dye + coating (laquer). a streak a few millimeters wide. that destroys the CDR just fine.

now that i start using DVDs, how to you kill a DVD? simply scratching it won't help because there's a polycarbonate later on both sides.

anyone has a simple, quick, effective and cheap method to kill those DVDs ?

Yes, I have a bucket lined with a plastic kitchen bag that I use in the backyard to pick-up after the dogs. In that bag they go.

If anybody wants 'em that badly, they gottem! :P

Depending on the media, you could try splitting it into 2 .6mm pieces of polycarbonate by taking a knife and peeling about .1mm of the edge somewhere, and then pry it in two.

It works on my Maxells and my TY, but I doubt it would work on Riteks, as they use so much glue.

You can boil DVDs pretty effectively I think

I just through them in trash can, BTW; why do you want to tear them apart is there any logic behind it?

Only 4 seconds in a microwave oven !
The only problem is safety while doing this: sparkles and maybe some toxic gases ?
What does for example cyanine produce while getting destroyed ?

Sometimes I just use scissors to cut them in an inward moving circle... but it gets dangerous near the centre of the disc since the cut edges can be rather sharp :o

i just set my media on the counter and yell at it like its my bitch and it owes me money

it cracks in half magically all by itself

no seriously, i pick up the disk walk over to my trash and put in in the trash

or just fold it in half over the trash and it will snap

make sure you have your eyes right at the dvd with em wide open #-o

Cyanide, possibly. If your lips turn blue after inhaling, don't bother with 911. Call your sympathetic mortician.

well, the microwave/boiling solutions aren't very healthy i would think.
i don't want any residual fumes anywhere near where my food is being prepared.

Rencor's idea sounds interesting, i should try it and see how easy it is to do.

@dolphin: what kind of scissors do you use to cut the DVD ? i would've thought a DVD is much too tough to be cut by scissors.

any other practical solutions out there ?

I was just using my regular scissors... but they are a pretty large and good quality, but not "heavy duty" really.

I always thought the canonical way to destroy a DVD was to
- burn it with a LiteOn or Artec burner
- using nVidia drivers
- in PIO mode (on the fly copy if possible)
- slap a label on it.

If that doesn't do the trick, snap it in two with 2 pliers (but in a bag to avoid flying shards).

well:
i tried cutting it up with scissors and it was actually rather easy!
straight line from the rim to the center. then again on the other side.
NO ONE is going to read my precious personal data off that DVD anymore.

also, splitting the DVD in 2 was also easy. an exacto-knife, pry it into between the two plastic parts in the center of the disc not the rim. then split into 2 plastic discs. after that cutting with scissors (necessary?) is even easier.

this was done on TY DVD+R.

Here's a new variant I saw on the way to work this morning. I was waiting for a U-Bahn ("Metro"- but it runs above ground where I board :o) when I heard some crunching noises. I looked again, and a number of CD's went sailing by and landed on the (busy) street. It took about 2 minutes and they were in pieces.

You can vary this approach according to your security requirements: from a quiet neighbourhood lane to a 100K+ per day freeeway.

I simply use my CD/DVD/Credit Card/Document shredder that I picked up from Staples!!

Works in seconds and permanently destroys them 8)
