First I upgraded the firmware to the BSMB version. I selected SolidBurn for all media.

I selected the Create Data Disc from Nero CD-DVD Speed. Now the test ran at 4x without me selecting anything. Is this normal?

I created a DVD-R previously, I get errors when I run the transfer rate test and also when I run the disc quality test I get a zero! This never happened with DVD+R. All discs are Samsung.

When I ran Qtest on blank media the PC stops responding! I tried another time I got errors on 8x, I tried again with 4x with no errors. I placed a second disc, my PC stopped responding again!

What's C1, C2, PI and PF? I can't find their meaning anywhere!!!

Then I ran a transfer rate test

and then, the disc quality test.

I need your opinions please.

The PI/PIF scans look alright. However, I'd be a little concerned with the drop in the transfer rate test.

And this means...

Something, probably writing quality or the media itself, is causing the slow down. This could, in theory, cause data corruption somewhere down the road.

I'd try enabling SolidBurn and see if it makes a difference. Maybe burn a few at 8x and see what it does too.

SolidBurn IS enabled. The disc was written at 4x.

You might get better results at 8x or even 12x!!

Also Qscan has a known bug with the BSMB FW. Personally I think its useless/pointless, just burn the disc then do a quality scan with CD-DVD speed to determine if the speed/settings are appropriate.

Also you need to try turning off solid burn and also try turning off wopc. Your results will vary with different media codes. Your discs MID is optodiscr008, and isn't considered great media.

Both OCFreak and Myself has no problem with OPTODISCR008 media at 8x and even 12x using SolidBurn and Overspeed at the same time.

I think that SOMETHING is holding the drive back here... is DMA enabled? The disc should NOT be burning at 4x only. The same problem was happening with Sony 8x DVD+Rs too... so I think we need to figure out what is causing the slow burning speed, and the quality issue will probably follow.

Other then DMA, any other ideas?

He is using CD-DVD speed to burn the disc, I don't know why, its a waste IMO. He needs to go into the options and choose the burn speed. (Duh!)

CDSpeed defaults to burning at the maximum speed of the disc/drive. I don't think that is the problem here. But if it was changed manually, then it should be reset to the defaults for the moment in order for us to get a better idea of how the media and drive are reacting to each other.

DMA MOde 2 is enabled. Dolphinius_rex is right, the program runs on default with maximum speed selected. I haven't touched anything.

There is something fishy. So, i have diabled WOPC and I'll try to burn another disc tomorrow, using Nero at 4x and see the results. I will use the same discs as they are the only ones I have (and I have no more money to get others!)

Since I have bought the drive the first disc I burnt was at 8x. The second was at 4x although I selected 8x! The drive also reads very slow, but not all the time. I tried installing FIFA06 which is 3.5 GB. It took about 20 minutes.

Finally, see if this helps. My second (slave) drive is a Sony DVD-ROM. It's running under PIO mode. I don't know why, but it used to run under DMA when I had my old Sony CR-RW drive. Could it be due to the data cable?

I got better results when I disabled WOPC from QSuite. I only got a single spike. I am using the same media (Samsung DVD-R 8x) at 4x. I get "8x not recommended" using Qtest, so I use 4x.

Can anyone illustrate to me what does SolidBurn do?

Also, I have a MDF/MDS image on my hard disk, how can I burn it without using Alcohol 120? The format is not supported by Nero.
