I am not succesfull writing to a DL memorex DVD with my NEC3500 firmware 2.16. Both with Nero and DVD shrink I immediately get an error as soon as the drive attempts to write. Are the media incompatible with the drive?

A lot of people have had a lot of problems with Ritek DL media. Try to get some Verbatim media as that is the "gold standard". If it burns OK then you know the problem was the Ritek media.

My 3500 did fair to the ritek media, I think I'm using the Liggy and Dee tweaked 2.18, but there are other newer ones out by them that may be better. I haven't bothered with it much since I got the 1620 and 1640 just recently. It truly is horrible media but my newest drive the 4550 seems to write it well enough to play in my pickiest machine, the BenQ's just dont do as well with it.
And yes all my drives seem to do well with the Verbatim media, even at 8x.

Upgrading your firmware to 2.1A should work. While the discs are readable, I do have some quality problems. This disc was recorded with my 3500A, 2.1A, read test done on my BenQ 1640:

There is no burning perimeter on this burned DVD is right to make the process acceptable, PIE,PIF and even level of Jitter make this burn candidate for problematic recorded disc and no doubt that is unreadable. May be you have problem with disc.

Odd, it seems that the writing strategy for DVD+R DL for 2.1A is later than that for 2.TB (1.27 vs. 1.26, see here:

Does writing at 4x give better results than 2.4x? :p
