Are there any good DVD writers at any of the major retailers in the U.S.?

Plenty.. but usually expensive.

You might want to check out the Plextor PX-740A as its on sale at Best Buy for $40 (after rebate) this week.

The Pioneer dvr-r100 was on sale last week for 69 with a 20 MIR, it's a 110d in the box with software bundle. The rebate is good till the 31st of this month even if it's off sale now as far as I can tell. This one is at Best Buy also.

you can get the NEC ND-3550A retail box at some Comp USA retail stores for 70 USD

Just a note that the 110 improved a great deal with the latest 1.37 firmware. I have the big 3 and my 1640 seems best with Normal media, my NEC 4550 or the 110 seem best with DL so far. I like all 3 but if it was going to be just one drive it'd be the 1640 right now. I picked up the NEC in a Mad Dog triple format box at Circuit City for 60 just short of a month ago, and CompUSA carries the exact same model so if you want to try that one just watch the sales between them.
One great thing about either the 110 or the 4550 is they both work pretty well with the Ritek/memorex D01 DL media =D>

Thanks a lot for the advice. I've got a pretty old PC right now, it has a PIII 867mhz processor in it. Will that be a problem with any of these drives? Also, what about the compatability of these drives with Linux?

PIII will be fine.
so should Linux.

I think many Best Buys are clearing out the PX-716A and 716UF drives. The ones around here (Atlanta area) have the 716A for $89.99 and the UF for $169.99.

The question is what are they clearing them out for? Plextor America still hasn't given me a straight answer as to whether or not we'll get the 750, 755 or 760.

The Best Buy stores seemed to put the 716 family on clearance when the 740 drives came out.

A couple of weeks ago, Office Max had a Digital Max 16X DVD R and RW for $39.99 after rebate. It's really a Lite On 5S163. It seems to work OK.
