problem w/ hp 640i

ok, i have been backing up some movies with this drive and have had no problems using Memorex dvd+r dl media i got from staples.

anyway, recently i upgraded the FW to JS04, and got some Verbatim discs from Wally World, and now i get error msgs.

the process i use is to
1 rip w/ dvd decrypter
2 use dvd shrink to create .iso file
3 use recordnow 7 to burn .iso to dvd

i also downloaded Nero to see if it would work, and i burned another coaster :(

my thinking is that since i have only changed two variables those are my only options to change. how do i return back to the original FW for the drive?
from what i have been reading here, Verbatim discs are good.
maybe Walmart carries the cheap ones?
running my finger around the edge of the disc i can feel some roughness, and looking at it closer, it seems like glue seeping out.

anyway, if anyone can point me in the right direction.......
TIA

just curious as to why your using dvd decrypter to rip

you can save a step and just rip with dvd shrink

Deffinately avoid using Memorex DVD+RDL, at least for the moment. Memorex is getting low grade Ritek DVD+RDL for their brand, if you need to rule out crappy media as a cause. If you're going to burn a double layer disc, then stick with Verbatim until you've gotten the kinks worked out.

If you follow Bestbuy and CompUSA sales, 10pks of Verbatim DVD+RDL are often on sale for $20 USD. If you're in Canada, then NCIX.com and Blankmedia.ca have the 10pks on sale for $28-$30 CAD from time to time also.

personally, i would rip with DVD Decrypter and burn with either Decrypter or ImgBurn (same author).
i use DVD Shrink only to shrink! :)

i would use imgburn but it doesn't incorprate itself into dvdshrink like dvddecrypter does

and it probably never will

why not? ImgBurn is written by the same programmer as DVD Decrypter, and it's very similar to it (to ISO Write mode).
i'm sure it's not difficult to update DVD Shrink in such a way that it will burn using ImgBurn. it's only a question if the guy who wrote DVD Shrink will do it.
