Is it physically and technically possible? Yes
Does it ever work? Not that I've seen

Are there alternatives? Yes! If you're lucky you can find BeAll's EX 4x DVD-Rs, which have a little extra capacity. Unfortunately, it looks like Meritline (who I bought mine from a long time ago, although I hate meritline with a passion!) has removed them from their site.

Hello!

Overburning works, AFAIK.

But the only pretty results I´ve ever seen came from newer Plextor-drives and only work with +R.

But I´m not sure, if I want to do this. I had many DVD-media that shows not nice results over the 4GB-mark, so I never had the idea to buy a Plextor and overburn this media

The 1640 overburns DVD+Rs quite nicely with the required patch/hack.
