I ordered a 100 pak of these from supermediastore a few months ago and have gone thru bout 70 of them now.

I have noticed on 4 of them so far, a blob in the clear layer. it does not appear to be in the dye. after burning just to see what it would look like after the burn, its bad.

I have noticed in 2 of them so far, a piece of dust with or I should say a comet like feature about some piece of dust in them.

thats 6 baddies so far per 70.
should this be expected or is this bad?

I wouldn't expect that. I buy my Taiyo Yudens through the retail store Sunday sales at about 30 cents a disc (Fuji & Sony DVD+R) and can't recall any that have had dye imperfections or dust. I must be getting to the 1000 mark on the Taiyo Yudens usage. When I first started burning with RitekG04's I would see about 1 in 50 or 1 in 100 with an obvious dye imperfection that would fail a verify after burn.

I noticed something like that too, and mentioned it in this thread

http://cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=151276#151276

Does that sound like what you're describing? Sounds like it wouldn't have been worth my time going through the return...

I have seen smaller numbers of this sort of defect on Maxell TY media (kind of rare, but maybe 1-2 in a spindle of 15 IF it had any defects... TYG01). Never have seen it on any other TY media except Supermediastore's ValueLine.

I read that thread justin, i cannot find any pinholes.
I got mt trusty 4D Maglite flashlight, turned it on and put a disk over the lite and looked at it via transmission, errr..

LIGHT ------------> |DISK| (my face)

I cant see any pin holes. you should be able to see about a 20 micron pinhole with yer bare eye in this config.
they are TYG01 from supermedia store, they are value line.

However were looking at about 6-8 baddies per 100 im hoping.

I get C1 C2 errors less than 10 for the ones that appear good.

It's not so much a pinhole through the whole disc, but a pinhole speck in the dye. (the silver layer is intact)

Do you have a flourescent light (kitchen/bathroom maybe) you could look at them in? It seems easier to spot the dye deformation. I think we're talking about the same thing, just describing it different ways. It looks like the dye got runny/lumpy and has a kind of wavy deformation in it?

I just looked at 5 of them under the kitchen flo. lighting.
I cant seem to see what it is your describing.

man, CDR's have never given me any problems what so ever at all.
these DVD's are really picky.

If I can get some pics of these with the microscopes at work Ill try, if not oh well.

FYI,

I'm forwarding all these comments on to people who may be able to fix problems. So if you have a comment about the Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-Rs, MAKE IT NOW

I just ordered my first batch of TY (Got 8x TYG02) from Shop4Tech last week (The value pack for $26.10). The very first disc under the clear protective disk had this exact same "comet"! It is there BEFORE I burned. It started at about 1/3rd from the center and ran to the very outside edge of the disc.

The next 10 discs I visually checked did not have this flaw. I was disappointed seeing this on a TY (knowing it would cause huge PIF errors if I burned it). If there are any more, I will send back the bad ones for replacement on my next order.

I definitely would not trust any data on the comet regardless of a successful verify or quality score. It's clearly visible to the untrained eye before burning.

hi bfrandse, welcome to CDRLabs.

please do burn that 1st disc, i'd be interested to see what happens and a scan if possible! (what's your drive?)

I have the following drives:
LiteOn 411S - FS0K
Toshiba 5112 - 1033 (X33)
BenQ 1620 - B7W9
NEC 3550a - 1.05 (1.Y5)

I had previously only purchased "cheap after rebate" office store media (Office Max, Staples, KHypermedia, Imation, Playo, Teon, StarLogic) that were typically CMC MAG various versions (and actually burn exceptionally well on the NEC) or trash discs like PRINCO, AML, UME01.

After horrendous results on these media on the 3 former drives, I purchased the NEC and decided to also spend a bit more and try some TY, since I had excellent results with their CD quality, even on the LiteOn drive.

As of yet, I havn't gotten to test for the best drive/burn speed on the "good" TY discs, I was going through all my cheap discs first. Once I do that, I will then do a CD Speed burn onto the comet disc at the best identified speed/drive and post the comparison. So that could mean a few weeks before I get all the good TY's checked for best burn and then get to the comet (and hopefully not find any more comets)

BTW--The TY discs are authentic. Guarenteed by the seller and have the correct serial number stamped into the hub.
