PlayO DL media with Scratch Shield

So I see that PlayO has some DL media available now at Meritline:
PlayO DL DVD+R 2.4X 8.5GB Dual Layer with Scratch Shield
http://www.meritline.com/playo-dl-dvd-plus-r-dual-layer-blank-media.html

Considering that PlayO was founded by some ex-Ritek employees, is it safe to assume that this is Ritek DL media they are using?

And what's with the scratch shield?

Anyone know what's up with this media?

"Ex-Ritek Employee" doesn't QUITE give off the correct level of speed and certainty with which Ritek kicked him, and his buddy out. If you look back in this forum, somewhere I believe I posted a scan of the letter sent out to EVERY distributor of Ritek product in North America, about this guy getting the boot, and not to deal with him if he claims to be from Ritek.

Still... Ritek is one of the greediest companies I know, so if they can make a quick buck, then maybe they'd even sell to Play-O?

Does Ritek have some sort of "scratch shield" developed?

Other than TDK, I can't think of anyone else who announced something like that.

.. thinks to self... would I trust media from a company that sounds suspiciously like Play-doh(tm)?

Hahah, and their logo sorta looks like the same font as Playboy's. I think. I haven't seen on in a while.

Maxell.... Optodisc.... TDK....

Ritek almost certainly does, and I would imagine CMC and Prodisc too.

Really? I didn't know that. Wow, how come we haven't seen them on store shelves? At least I haven't here in the US. And heavens know I like looking at media. :)

PlayO actually sent me some of their 8x +R and -R media a few months ago. The packaging doesn't make any mention to where the discs were made. The discs themselves had TY MID's but were obviously not made by TY.

Looking at Videohelp.com, PlayO discs are available at Staples. The people there got discs with UME and AML MID's.

I'm kinda curious about PlayO's DVD+R DL media. I asked for some samples but the company hasn't sent me any yet. I kinda doubt they'll be Ritek.

I saw some at Staples the other day. It said Made in China. I stayed far away.

Well, I'm not sure where Optodisc's media ended up.... Maxell's is sold as their BQ series 8x DVD-Rs, and is only available in North America from Professional dealers (In Canada it's available from NCIX.com through a special deal). TDK's were grey market imported by www.blankmedia.ca and sold for a while, but the high cost and low interest forced the product to be ditched I believe.

I know Maxell also has some hardened coat 16x DVD-R/+R media for sale in Europe (Finland I *THINK*)

MAM-A has also told me they're working on something, but I've only seen one sample of it, and have received no press release from them about it's availability.

I am curious about other manufacturer DL media. I have yet to see a Prodisc or CMC DL disc and am curious how they perform.

I've only ever gotten Ritek D01 and MKM 001 in my +R DL purchases, and I want to try something new.

Maybe I'll order a pack of these and see what they are.

I got a 10 pack of PlayO DVD+R DL media today. It doesn't have the scratch shield stuff though. According to the packaging it was "Made in China".

Here's the MID code. As you can see, the ND-3530 in my Dell doesn't recognize it correctly.

Interesting. I wonder how other drives see it.

I hadn't seen reports of any DL media with an AML MID code.

I wouldn't say developped incase of optodisc I doubt that Optodisc developped it themselves but I could be wrong.
Incase of CMC they can use MCC and TDK coating technology.
And Prodisc can use MCC technology.
Also I think fuji has also a coating for it which means anoter option for prodisc, a option for ritek, another option for MBIL.

We have seen it advertised.
(I think I or Dolphinius Rex posted a wholesale link of chinese dual layer which was supposed to use AML according to the advertisement from the manufacturer.)

Nice to see it finally showing up.
I will add it to dvd-identifiers list so it can be identified back to Advance media limit (technology supplier !)

One thing I currently think that there is no drive that has a optimal strategy for it which means that it has to use a generic dual layer strategy.
Which means at this moment that not much drives can burn it (let alone burn it decent !)
If the ADIP data is good you could try Lite On, Plextor or Benq but I still think that the change is ultra small that some drive can burn this at a time.

Hmm Maybe you could ask playo if they know a drive that supports it ??
:-k

It's nice to see I was right on it not being Ritek... I was wondering who their other option would be, since I was pretty sure they wouldn't go with Verbatim!

Very interesting DL media you've got there Ian.

Abcron sent me another spindle of PlayO DVD+R DL media. Unlike the last batch, these are actually dual layer discs and not regular DVD+R media in the wrong package. #-o

As you can see, these have a MID of RICOHJPN D00.

So far from scans I've seen, it looks like the fake Ricoh code DVD+RDL media is still better quality then Ritek DVD+RDL :o

I'm not exactly sure who actually manufactured these. Like the other PlayO discs I've received, there is no serial number on the hub. These are made in China if it helps any.
