Fry's Electronics has today on sale The Pacific Digital Drive 16X by 16X for $59.99 in retail version. Does any one knows who makes this drive?.

In the past they've used BenQ, NEC and Artec. I don't know what they're using for their 16x drive though.

Unless you really need a retail drive today, that's not that great of a price... (even if you DO need a retail drive.. you can often get non-rebranded Pioneers or LGs much cheaper)

I just get nervous buying drives obviously rebadged from another OEM, since who knows what kind of support you'll get in the future. If you have to use hacked firmware to update your drive or something, it negates the warranty, which kind of goes against the point of using a retail drive...

Justin42 brings up some good points. You could get a retail BenQ or NEC for about the same price at Newegg.

If the drive is BenQ then with price match of %115 from stable you can buy it for almost $50 which considering retail and no shipment it would be worth.

It has also been a rebadged Toshiba in the past. ](*,)
