Quick Scan DVD Advice

I have been archiving all my home movies to DVD for a couple of years and once I create the DVD movie I also archive the original AVI capture.

Next I burn the AVIs to a DVD-R using the UDF format since that seem to be the one that Nero suggested for this size file. I own Nero 6.6 and & 7.0

My question for some of the experts here is, what is a good quick way to scan just to ensure that the disc is readable? I typically play portions of the AVI to test but scanning in Kprobe or Nero takes too long for the number of discs I need to do.

I tried Nero CD/DVD Speed - Disc Scan but it crashes on UDF discs for some reason.

Any help, tips or short cuts would be appreciated. My drives are listed below.

Thanks.

What UDF version are you using?
You should be using 1.02 for test software.

I hate to say I never even paid attention the version but I just checked in Nero and the default is 1.02 so I believe they are all burned in the version.

I know that my last 3 are in that version because I just did them but CD/DVD Speed still crashes. Perhaps I should post this in the Nero forum, but do you have any suggestions on other tools to use?

Thanks for the help.

I don't know enough about UDF versions to comment on that, but a couple of things came to mind that you could try:
- try doing a transfer rate test with KProbe (it's found on the "Performance" tab)
- just copy the contents of the disc to your hard drive. It's sort of like a transfer rate if you time it, but it's the real thing, not a test
- there are various programs around that will do a check sum of your files, but I suspect that won't be very fast.
- send an e-mail to Erik Deppe. I've found him to be very helpful with questions and suggestions (as time permits). There are a number of contact addresses on the CD Speed home page, e.g. on http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=email.html

Thanks for the suggestions. Kprobe works fine and some of the other tabs with in CD/DVD speed works as well.

I have done a copy to hard drive for some of them just to test when it seemed a DVD drive would not play the AVI file correctly. You are right, it is a good test because that is exactly what I would be doing in the future if I need to retrieve the AVI but it is not very fast.

I sent an email to the developer last night with the details so maybe he can offer some suggestions.

Other than that when working with a >4gb file maybe I just cannot get much quicker.

I appreciate the thoughts and suggestions.

I don't use this myself, but have you tried Nero's verify function?

I normally do not use verify either when burning, however I do use it when burning this particular discs. I have never seen a verification not be successful either.

Perhaps I have just over doing it. I would like to be able to scan these discs in the future just for quick test purposes. With all the controversy over media durability I would like to able to avoid any problems.

Thanks.

I found that PlexTools does exactly what I want for my 716A but cannot find a similar utility for the Sonys.

I just installed 6.6.1.4 and it has version 4.11 of CD / DVD Speed. 4.11 solves the problem and will now ScanDisc an UDF disc.

Thanks!!!!!!!!!!
