Costco TDK DVD-Rs from BOGO sale

Since it has been mentioned here on this forum before, I thought I should post some of my results with testing the TDK 16x white inkjet printable media, often sold at Costco on a buy one get one free sale (~$45 CAD for 200 discs).

So far, I've burned 2 discs, and both have made me believe my initial thoughts on them were correct. This media is low grade stuff, probably B Grade or worse.

The first disc was burned in the DVR-110 running firmware 1.37. I've attached a picture of the burn, and my test of it in my DW1640.

I then burned a disc in my BenQ DW1640. The speed was automatically pushed down to 4x by the WOPC. I think it probably kept the disc from turning out like the one burned on the Pioneer! But it still isn't that good :o

I hope to do further testing on this media, and eventually test the 16x DVD+Rs as well.... but it depends a lot on if I can find time.

I knew to get the +R's on that sale and MII instead of MIT :D
BTW, I have seen excellent burns with that TTH02 stuff

well, what I'm trying to get across here is that the media is highly variable, and risky.

I meant to say that wopc was off on the 1640 (SB off too).

For whatever reason I get better burn with wopc off, with pretty much every media. Others get really good results with it on, so I guess the drives do in fact vary, as well as the media as you pointed out.

I know in the begining MII media was quite poor. Most recent scans of MII media looked quite good, and that prompted me to get some.

MIJ>MII>MIT>MIC I think EU makes media now, don't know where they would fit in though. :)

TDK's own manufacturing sites are luxembourg and Japan. These are the places that make most new stuff (demonstrating technology).
Quality of luxembourg is good.
Then there is CMC (and probally also RITEk but I have to double check that one still) who make media in Taiwan.
And then there is MBIL in India.
The point why I was suprised about the TDK code is that all OEM jobs befor done by MBIL for TDK (good consistant media) had MBIL's own codes.
