Anyone have any info on the ND-4570A or ND-4571A? It's been mentioned on a few Asian and European sites but I have not seen any specs. I have a feeling this drive will support 16x DVD-RAM. :D

Hello!

Don´t want to disappoint you, but here I read it supports only 5x DVD-RAM:

Hmmm... I wonder why they're bothering with it then. It's essentially the same as the 4550A.

NEC needs to put out a drive every couple months or they feel inadaquate

I try to only buy every third or fourth drive from them.

As mentioned before, where will you get 16X DVD-RAM discs ? And the price will be

I still only find 3X DVD-RAM in local shops for my LG 4166  ...
Need to buy 5X discs on the net for 4+ euros.

true but you don't need so many DVD-RAM discs.

I just ordered the 4551 from the UK so I hope not. I now just have to make up my mind whether to keep the 109 or put it in an external enclosure since out of all my drives it's the one least likely to see another FW release.

It looks like its out in the UK. Dee picked one up:

It sounds like the drive has a new bezel, new track and writes to DVD-R DL media at 8x.

I wonder if the format will live long enough to actually have 8x DVD-RDL media become widely available?

DVD-RDL came out in Canada... and then kinda disappeared for the most part as nobody bought any, and it barely worked under the best circumstances.

Hey all,

What does everyone think would be the better choice between the 4570A and the 3550A? Looks like I have a choice to make, and NEC has served me well so far.

I have a 3500A at home, a 3530A (OEM in a Precision 670 workstation) at work, both are good drives. I just haven't had to make a purchasing decision on one in awhile.

I want excellent DVD and CD writing quality and media compatibility; I don't need as good of read quality (my LiteOn in my sig does fine for that).

the difference between the NEC 4570 and NEC 4550 is the improved chipset.
I think it is the same main difference as between the Pioneer 111 and the Pioneer 110.

Need to buy 5X discs on the net for 4+ euros.

You can buy 5x DVD-RAM's online at OS-Mediatrade in Germany:
http://www.os-mediatrade.com/index.php? ... 04d1ed2d9e
There you can get get these non-cartridge and single sided DVD-RAM's
- under the brand Panasonic with the MID code MXL16
- under the brand Verbatim with the MID code M01 J5006

I see that you are in France (moi aussi !)
If you live near the german border you can buy Panasonic 5x DVD-RAM
at a Mediamarkt shop in Germany for 4,99 €.
I mean the same a non-cartridge single sided DVD-RAM 4,7 GB
under the brand Panasonic:
Image LM-HC47ME - (Made in Japan)

At my local Mediamarkt at Freiburg-im-Breisgau
I get:

- these Panasonic "non cartridge" ones with the MID code M01-J5006
[so it is not the same MID as given by OS-Mediatrade]

- and the Panasonic 5x in a cartridge: Type 2 disc removable / Item: LM-HB47ME
with the MID code MXL16 !
