I am finally ready to retire my DRU-500A and wanted to add a good drive for media scanning among other things. Based on all the comments here I am going to pick up a BenQ DW1655 to go along with my other drives.

I already have an external USB / Firewire case that I have been using the DRU-500A with and I was wondering if anyone else has tried one of these with the DW1655? I do most of my critical burning with my PX-716A so this drive would be for additional scanning and some backup burning in additon to my Sony.

Any help is appreciated.

My drive finally arrived and I decided to put in on the same IDE bus as the DRU710A but as the master. It sounds like others have had trouble with this one being external. So far it seems to be happy installed along with my Sony.

Also ended up with the OEM drive and did not realized it would have a different FW. Should have checked this out sooner. Cross flashed to the Retail FW seems to have solved the really poor performance issues while scanning.

All in all seems like a good drive at a good price.
