Need help between two externals - can't figure it out

Hi all,

This forum is amazing. I've spent the day doing research, here and elsewhere, but I can't make a final decision...

I need to buy and external DVD burner, and the most important factor is the write quality. I make wedding videos and need the have the best quality writes.

I've narrowed it down to 2 models:

Plextor PX-740UF
and the
Sony DRX-810UL

From what I can tell, the internal versions of these are both based on the BenQ DW1640 which has gotten really good reviews here. However, I can't tell if the external versions are also based on this (similar model # but you never can tell).

So, can anyone give me some recommendations, first hand feedback, or other advice that might help? I really appreciate it.

I was also wondering if you know if I will be able to flash the Plextor external with the BenQ firmware the way you can to the internal?

Yes, they're both still based on the BenQ DW1640.

I have not tested the DRX-810UL but I had some problems getting the PX-740UF to read and write at 16x.

Thanks IAN

Other than the cost factor (which work is paying for) and 16x issue, do you think I should go with the Plextor? I've heard great things about the DW1640. Do you think I can flash the Plextor with the BenQ flash?

I doubt you can use the stock BenQ flash to update the drive. You can use BQFlasher if it is a BenQ drive rebadged as Sony or others.

BQFlasher

Kiss your Sony warranty good bye unless you can flash back in case of a return.

Yeah, you'll need BQFlasher if you want to use the stock BenQ firmware.
