Thanks for the tip. :D

There's nothing new there for my new toy. I broke down and bought a 165P6S :D - figured it was time to do soemthing about the burgeoning BenQ monoculture developing here. It is much better than my SOHw-1231S@1653S (but that's not hard :(). I'll post some results shortly- I'm very pleased with the drive.

The 5S and 6S drives apparently have an issue burning dash (DVD-R) media: the leadin area is too large and many other drives won't recognize the discs. This has been fixed in beta firmware that has been made available thanks to LiteOn employees (Wind and Karr) (see this thread at CDFreaks).

According to Wind, these official firmware versions do not yet incorporate the fix.

So CD Freaks is making these beta firmwares available to the public too, eh? Are dolph and I the only people NOT giving them out?

As far as incorporating the fixes... they don't as most of these were produced about a month or so ago.

Right! Actually, some guys at CDFreaks really drew this problem to their attention. They were being ignored by official LiteOn support but managed to get Wind's attention. It was fixed a couple of days later. After that he was deleuged by PM's and arranged to have the beta fw made available for testing.

I wish more companies would cooperate with the online communities instead of fighting them.

Yep, Lite-On is very good in this regard. I really hope they start pushing their new technologies and the utilities that go with them. There's no reason why they shouldn't be competing with companies like BenQ and Plextor in this regard.
