Mine takes awhile to recognize discs too, but not that long. Might be the media...my NEC 3540 takes 45+ seconds to recognize a DVD+R DL disc...I've learned not to use it with those.

Try a quality scan on that disc...if it's pretty bad, that could be part of it.

Does it take awhile on other brands of discs, or pressed discs?

22 seconds to recognize a disc is insanely slow. I'm kind of a guessing it could be a media problem, so you should run a disc quality test in Nero CD Speed and post the result.

i get the slow recognize with all sorts of dvds, cds, games...not too cool. i have two 1655 and one of them just ate my battlefield 2 install cd...destroyed it. i'm sending it back (the burner, not the cd).

i wonder if they both are duds??

How the heck did it eat your CD?

I know that I have problems with slow recognition times only when the media quality is poor. Usually only if there is a very big group of large errors right at the beginning of the disc, or if there is a very high negative minimum beta value (say -7% or greater).

i dunno how it ate my cd...somehow i put it in and after 5 secs starting making this whirring, clicking, cracking sound (fun) and then when i opened the tray......No cd.

I was like...um, that's new.

somehow the damn cd got jammed ABOVE the tray. had to take the drive out and pull the cd out with some tweezer gymnastics.

My 1655 does take a few seconds to load up even good media but not as long as 22 secs.

As a side note I have an old CD ROM drive that will sometimes open the drawer when I hit the button and the CD is still spinning =D>

If it is running at 48x I have had it lanch off of the tray across the room. [-X I have a replacement for it but it is kind of fun to never know what is going to happen when you hit the button. Keeps me on my toes.
