which drive should i take on the road with me ie whats tough

i drive a semi and it beats the hell out of everything in it. My gateway laptop just died after 5 months of service in the truck. i use my laptop for gps so it is running 14 hrs a day minimum. I just bought a new 64 bit laptop but it only has a cd burner in so i want to put a dvd burner externally on it.which ones are pretty shock resistant? I own the following already that i can use which would save some money which is good.

That's a good question about vibration and I really don't know. You'd think the better constructed drives (Pioneer and NEC IMO) would last longer.

Most externals probably compare for same specs for Class B SOHO use, but road vibration may be out of spec. Anything should have some extra shock mounting, like a high density pad, to absorb most shocks.

standalone gps sucks simply put. One the display is small and hard to see .when you are driving an 80 ft vehicle you can accidently swerve trying to zoom in to see where you are at you will kill someone. Second and most important is they show car routes only not big truck routes. Most people seem to forget a semi sits at least 13ft 6 inches tall and cant make alot of tight turns. I run alk copilot truck gps. Shows DOT approved routes. My laptop has a 16" screen on it which makes it really easy to read it while driving. I also do all of my logbooking on my computer and print it out for the oh so unfriendly DOT when requested. I run Copilot truck,microsoft streets and trips, and delorme all on my laptop. Works like a charm. My wife helps out too sometimes.

no way would i buy a standalone gps
the only reason i own a laptop is for gps in the car
ohh and if i was a trucker the pr0n would be great to have too

Well, I see why you choose laptop over standalone, then.
