got my 111d to the top dog now, still testing what works. Seems to not like MCC media much yet, others seem OK so far but my 1655 still does a bit better on many.
Anyways, thanks Ian.

The only review of a Pioneer 111 D with the former firmware 1.06
is available at CDRinfo.

Some of the burns on DVD-R @ 16x and @12x do not look good,
for example:

@ 16x:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews ... &PageId=13
Datawrite Classic DVD-R 16x@16x: TTH02
MKM 16x@16x MCC 03RG20 (MID code identique à DVD-R 16x Verbatim):
« Writing quality with DVD-R 16X media is not as good as we've seen with the plus media.
. . .
Datasafe media was the only media that produced a smooth speed graph but it had a rather high error levels and count
We should also mention that we retested all unreadable media with a second LiteOn drive,
but unfortunately the results were the same »

@12x:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews ... &PageId=13
« Here, with 12X burning speed, the drive showed average quality »

So I suppose somebody at CDRLabs is working on a review
and will hopefully tell us that there is an improvement with the new firmware 1.39

On top of that the drive (Pioneer 111DBK) tested there at CDRinfo was "Made in China"
and broke down before the end of the review ...

See here in the conclusion:
http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Reviews ... &PageId=24
« One final point, is that we had a problem with the drive which is most probably
due to a faulty unit.
After burning an initial batch of media, we were unable to perform any more burns and hence were unable to provide any writing strategy graphs.
Pioneer will be shipping another unit off to our labs.
We should then be able to complete our tests,
the results of which will be updated in a follow-up review. »
