Best USB External DVD Burner?

I'm thinking of getting a USB External DVD Burner for general purpose use with different desktops and laptops. Can anyone make suggestions based on real experience with some of the ones avbailable?

Should I just get a Plextor PX-740UF? (great review here, not so good user reviews at Newegg)

What about the LITE-ON SHW-1635SX? (good reviews at Newegg)

Would I be better off getting an external enclosure and putting one of my 1640s or a 1650 in it? If so, can anyone reccomend an external enclosure?

thanks.

In the past, I would have recommended one of Plextor's external drives but I'm not a fan of their new enclosures. I've had too many problems with the USB/FireWire bridges in them.

If you're gonna go the Lite-On route, you're probably better off with a 6 series drive like the SHM-165P6SX, SHW-160P6SU or SHM-165P6SU. Some people like the SHW-1635S but I've never been overly impressed.

You like Darth Chef? That has gotta be one of my favorite Southpark episodes ever.

Thanks for the info on the Lite-On drives. I will check 'em out.

Yep, Darth Chef fits the "Grand Master of Funk" really well.. it's just about as close to perfection as it could be.

Any thoughts on installing an internal burner in an external enclosure?
