DVD+RW: full erasing and booktyping

i full-erased a DVD+RW that had been booktyped as DVD-ROM, and it stayed that way. i was surprised since i had thought it would "revert" to DVD+RW booktype.
isn't DVD+RW the "default" booktype?
doesn't full-erase affect the booktype?

anyone else's experience and comments welcome.

prob. depends on which burner (and its default RW booktype setting) you are doing the full format in eg. BenQs will full format to ROM.

guess i didn't think of that one. #-o
it was full-erased it on an LG (GSA-H10L), LG drives don't booktype DVD+RW. i guess that's why it stayed -ROM.

I full-erased a DVD+RW w/ DVD-ROM booltype in a H20L and the disc reverted back to DVD+RW booktype.

how annoying

weird!
the H20L does not do DVD+RW bitsetting, does it ? AFAIK no LG drive does.

changing the booktype involves writing to the first few bits (or sectors???) of a DVD+ disc, according to a CDFreaks article.

If LG drives can change the booktype from DVD-ROM -> DVD+RW (in my case, H20L), it simply means that the drive CAN write to those few bits.

LG is just refusing to implement booktype changing in firmware from DVD+RW -> DVD-ROM, that's all.

EDIT : Nero 6.6.1.4 full erase in the LG does not change the booktype, but the format option in CDSpeed does.

another possible explanation is that the H20L is made with a Panasonic chipset whereas the H10A/N/L with Renesas chipset. this is what i had thought was the explanation, till your last post.

i gather form your post that you did a full-earse with CDSpeed. so it might be a software issue after all.
did you do 'Erase' or 'Format'?
off-topic: what's the difference between 'Erase' and 'Format' in CDSpeed?

dammit...just killed a Sony S11 disc by accidentally hitting its edge on a table. The disc split apart at the edge :(

anyway, using another disc that's been set to DVD-ROM in my Liteon, I did some tests in the H20L.

N6.6.1.4
Quick Erase -> Still DVD-ROM
Full Erase -> Still DVD-ROM

CDSpeed 4.51.3
Quick Erase -> Still DVD-ROM
Full Erase -> Still DVD-ROM
Quick Format -> DVD+RW
Full Format -> no point testing....

the drive itself is capable of changing the booktype of a DVD+RW disc. One can only guess why LG doesn't want to enable changing of booktype to DVD-ROM. Maybe it's a company policy or maybe LG's just being a lardbutt :lol:

off topic: where did you get CDSpeed 4.51.3 ?
latest Nero 7 update ?
it's not on the website.
