DVD-RAM :: Benefits in all modes ?

wherever you read a description of DVD-RAM, it's being
talked about how you can use it like a hard-disk and how
reliable the defect-management is
well fine...besides they always forget to mention that you need
to format them in FAT or UDF, with the udf requiring additional
software....it's understandable how to use it as 'hard-drive'
now i'm still missing a thorough description of the defect-management
which pretty much is the only reason for the RAM's existence compared
to RWs
so let's say i'm burning a DVD-RAM as ISO9660 maybe even as
Multi-Session
will i still get the benefits of the defect-management because it may be hardware built-in?
or does that only count for packet-writing modes?
