Could you help me decide between the Benq 1655 or NEC 3550? I have both, use both, and don't know enough about error tests and other things to have an opinion for which burns better. Are either better at keeping firmware updated or supporting older products over the years?

I'm ordering a few of them and some will be used in machines getting an upgrade from 4x burners, and another set of 7 will be used in a dvd / cd duplicator. Or maybe I should consider liteon or samsung (I have no recent experience with either).

Your help is appreciated. Thank you! Sean

Benq has much better firmware support than NEC. I dont have the 1655 or 3550 I have the 1640 and the 3540 and of those two the BenQ is a better burner I havent read the BenQ 1655 review yet but I hear it is good too. For a duplicator I would use pioneers myself. They are workhorses and used by many duplicators.

I have a bunch of BenQ's, a 4550/51 and a 111. The BenQ is better at SL media and the 111 is better at DL and can support label flash with the proper hacked firmware.
Both drives do most media pretty well as far as 1655 or 111 but that's my personal observations on mine so far.

Unless you want a drive that can actually burn at 16x... then the DVR-111 falls down, as it restricts most 16x media to 12x (does a DAMN good job of it though!).
