Burn freezing mid-way with Samsung SH-182

Ok, NOW I'm not so happy with my Samsung 18x drive.

Twice tonight, the burn is freezing before the end. Once at 28% (I cancelled it 6:23 into it with no progress for quite awhile) with Nero, once around 80% with ImgBurn.

Two different programs, same problem.

The discs are Verbatium 16x DVD-Rs.

Anyone else having this problem?

I haven't burned as many discs as you, but I can't say I've run into that problem.

Actually, I've only burned about 10-12 discs with this drive - and this is only happening on 18x burns with Verbatium -R's. I'm about to try again (3rd freeze in the last hour, this time at 92%) with the TY media...

I've burned a maybe 6-8 Verbatium DVD+R's at 8x-12x with zero problems, so I'm not sure if it's the media or drive yet.

heheh, neither have I cos the booktyping is such a PITA... got to remember to do so before each and every CDSpeed burn.

MonsterMan, app freeze or PC freeze, no Nero log?

The software isn't crashing...it's just the burn process is freezing. This happened with three seperate burning apps:
CDSpeed2000 (Create Data Disc, registered as "User cancelled", which is strange since I was no where near the PC the entire time it was burning),

ImgBurn 2.0;

Nero 6.6.

ImgBurn shows the burn speed dropping to 0.0x and staying there. Nero shows the last burn speed before the freeze; the last one was 16.2x.

So far, this has only happened with the Samsung 182 & Verbatium 16x DVD-R's burnt at 18x.

All the +R's I've burnt have been fine (although only 1 was at 18x).

I have only burned two of the 16x TYs. I'm not happy with the quality, so don't really want to use them. But I think I'll kill a few to burn test discs; try to see if it happens with these, too...

Ha! Caught in the act:

Seems to be very consistent...use Verbatium DVD-R's, freeze about 75% of the time.

Not a good record.

Took ImgBurn forever to finally cancel the burn. Oddly, CDSpeed shows the disc as blank and my 1620 is currently creating a data disc out of it.

How much ya wanna bet it's gonna be unreadable? You know, since the 182 burned like 10% of it already...

Edit:
Yup...won't even recognize the finished disc.

Burning at high speed (16X and 18X) has the tendency that the process frozen or go wrong before the writing finishes. I have not seen or heard people been too happy with this burning speed.

Hmm.

I seem to have found the "trigger."

Task switching.

Any task switching away from the burning app, BAM, app freezes.

Again, THREE burning apps. And only ONE type of disc in this one burner does this. Remember, I have SIX DVD burners and have never seen this
problem before.

I've have since burned quite a few TY's at 18x with zero failures, even under heavy multitasking load. With the Verbatium DVD-Rs, any switch, even just to my media player, and boom, burn freezes.

Wierd. ](*,)

I can not think of anything that could explain why it would do this with only one type of disc. Maybe a firmware update will help

Ok, I now think this was just a bad drive.

Just got a SH-182M (the Lightscribe version of the 182D), and it works flawlessly with these discs :D :P :D

Given the burn quality & speed, I'm happy now!
