I currently have a PX-716a as master and a sony dru710a (which I use as a reader) as slave on the secondary ide channel, and my hd on the primary ide channel. I do A LOT of on the fly copying and I've been told that the rom and burner should never be on the same channel. I then put the rom and burner on seperate channels but didn't see a difference in the time it took to burn on the fly at 8x (it took about 11 mins.) compared to 8 mins. if burning from hd. Keep in mind it took 11 mins. no matter if the rom/burner was on the same or different ide channels. Are there any other suggestions that would optimize on the fly burning performance? Would it be beneficial to have a better dvd reader maybe? I appreciate any suggestions!

It could be that the reader is the limiting factor. I'm not sure what type of discs you're copying, but it might read at say 6x max, causing the writing time to take longer.

I normally use Verbatim 16x dvd+r. How would I verify the speed that the reader is reading the disc?

Try CD Speed (www.cdspeed2000.com). Just pop in the disc you're trying to copy and run a transfer speed test.

Thanks a lot. I ran the test and this is what I came up with:

it started at 3.43x and ended at 8.28x with an average transfer of 6.21x

since the transfer started at such a low rate was this perhaps the problem?? If so, do you recommend a good, fairly inexpensive dvdrom? Thanks!

Yup, that's most likely the problem. The price of DVD writers have dropped so low that you're probably better off trading in that Sony for something like a BenQ DW1655.
