Yep, subscribers get an early look at Sony's new SATA DVD writer.
If you haven't guessed by now, the AW-Q160A is based on a Lite-On design. I'm not sure which yet. Here's a few pics to start you off.

Odd, DVD-RAM is supported in the firmware, but the drive doesn't support it (for reading or writing)

that's not all that's odd.
according to InfoTool no DVD-R DL, according to the fw dump 9 types supported.
DVD+R9 no write speeds ???
no support for MCC DVD+/-R ???

Any idea which chipset is used? Does it support PI/PIF tests etc with CD-Speed or KProbe or DVDScan ?
SATA is
slowly catching on!

To answer some of your questions..
The drive writes to DVD+R DL media at 8x. However, it requires media rated at that speed. With Verbatim's 2.4x DL media, the speed was limited to 4x.
The drive recognized DVD-R DL media without any problems. I have not done any test burns yet though.
The drive seems to work alright with KProbe. I did have to switch the driver to SPTI or whatever before it would recognize the drive.
With CD Speed, the number of PI Failures seems abnormally low. It makes me think its not calculating them correctly or its using Sum1.
Keep the questions coming.. I'll probably move this thread over to the non-subscriber part of the forum in the next day or two.

Looks like it's a MediaTek chipset then...

Do you mean the maximum value for PIF? CDSpeed
does use Sum1 for PIF on LiteOn drives. Normally, the results from CDSpeed and KProbe are essentially identical (except for some idiosyncracies in averages). Since your scans are at different speeds, the totals aren't exactly comparable though.

Yeah, you're right. I don't use it with my Lite-On drives.
If I remember right, both use the same API's to gather the data from the drive.

As I mentioned in another thread, the drive is based on the Lite-On SH-16A7L. Take note that with this firmware, the drive reports that it supports DVD-R DL.
