hello guys, im new at this, so any info is gladly appreciated. had the 1640 for a yr. using same media until recent.

ive been using Ridata 8x +R(Ritek R03 ver.2) media since, the thing is that the R03 is out and the newer versions the Ridata 16x +R(Ritek R05 ver.1) isnt good at 16x is the Qsuitescan(2.1).

im just wondering what are the firmware updates for, does upgrading affect the drives performance?

has anyone tries using Imation 16x +R media on this drive, or any other brands? is it good?

how do you use the solid burn function anyway? i use Nero 7 for burning, if i inable the function will it work with Nero?

Problem with Imation is that they use disc from a lot of manufacturers and with a lot of different MID codes. Reason while it will be hard to suggest that these will work good in all situations.

Enabling it through Benq's Qsuite will let it work in Nero and other software.

I have seen some very good results with RITEKR05 incomination with this drive incombination with the firmware BSOB and SOLID BURN on at 12x !, with solid burn off things were much worse.

However it could be that Ritek again suffers from huge variations or your media was of a lower grade.

so i just enable solidburn on all formats and it will help in the overall performance of the drive, right?

one more question, my dvd player cant read +R media properly, does changing the booktype on +R media to -R solve this issue? and will this automatically work on Nero, or do i have to set something first at Nero?

You can change it to -ROM.. not -R. In some cases this will help but its not a guaranteed solution.

In Nero, click on Recorder and then Choose Recorder. If its supported, there will be a pull down box. Otherwise use BenQ's QSuite utility or CD Speed.

i tried using Nero CD-DVD Speed tester, but its wierd the tester cant detect Ridata media properly, the speed it show on 16x Ritek R05(blank) is @52x max. i tried testing in anyway and it killed the disc literally. i also tried other Ritek media and Hp(blank), Nero didnt detect it properly either, the only media it detected right was the Philips 8x -R(with data). whats wrong with this? is this a software bug/error? it cant seem to test blank media. wierd.

im also using the BSRB firmware, is this ok? i could not find any info on this the only thing they wrote on the release note is updated firmware, nuts

in neroscan whats the averagly acceptable value on PIE,PIF and Jitters? cuz my scan on the Daxon went up like nuts.

IMHO, I would recommend that you use your Ritek media for data file backup, then for burning movies, video, etc, I highly recommend the Verbatim 16X DVD+R media w/the media code MCC 004---that and the Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R media code#YUDEN000T02 (generally available online) are some of the best discs to use in that drive.

Burn the MCC 004 at 12X instead of 16x w/the Benq 1640--since it doesn't do full 16x as well as the Liteon 165P6S, and as for firmware on the unit, I think that BSLB would not be a bad choice.

feel free to do a quality test w/CD/DVD speed to verify, but that is the most readily available quality media here in the US. I buy most of mine at BestBuy on sale.

Finally, there are two types of MCC 004 you can buy--identified by the cake box descriptors--but I would be hard pressed to tell you which one is better--look at cdfreaks.com for more info. also, there is a post on cdfreaks that have the disc qualilty tests for single-layer discs on the 1640, generally referencing a specific firmware.

oh, one more thing, burn w/the free program ImgBurn versus nero, there is better support there and it was written by the author of DVDShrink.
