Actually suggest to my nephew who will put it in his new Compaq Presario. Don't know if he cares about Lightscribe. If you want to rank them that's cool too. Need to get it at NewEgg. These all seem to be good burners from what I have read.

Deffinately the Pioneer DVR-111D, you'll note it was the winner of the September poll, and is doing well in the October poll as well.

Wow.. the NEC 7170A is finally out in the US. I'm gonna have to order myself one of those.

The 111D; it kicks butt.

The Lite-On is not a very impressive burner, IMHO. The 111Ds burn quality smokes it. But the Litey can do media tests, too...which is why I have both.

I've been less than impressed with the 18x Samsungs. I had the non-lightscribe drive, and it was pretty darn good except for one odd bug. So, I replaced it with the Lightscribe version. Burn quality is overall pretty horrible with it. I'm tempted to try again on a non-LS model, but think I'll just wait for the 18x LG drive.

Newegg has the 18x Sony and NEC drives now. I'd like to see a review of those things writing quality before I can comment.

If your going to have just one do it all drive for now I'd say the 111 also. I also have many of the big brands and that's the best one for DL and regular is good too, plus you can add label flash if ya want.
For normal disk burning I like my BenQ's, but for all around there ya go.

I voted also for the Pioneer, maybe the only writer that comes near to Benq 1650/1655 in writing-quality

Neither my BenQ DW1650 nor my BenQ DW1655 can touch my Pioneer DVR-111D'd burn quality
(And I'm not talking about one or two media types only!)

Similar in single layer (I like both), and superior in dual layer (DVR-111D is better then DW1640).
