I am looking to buy 2 burners both for friends of mine, I am an NEC fan and always have been. I went on new egg to find out that NEC has released a 18x burner, the 7170A. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6827152076

Has anyone seen reviews or used this burner ? Whats the error rate like? Should I attempt to get these instead of lets say a 4570? Looks like the 7170a may have a quality control problem with DOA ?

Hey Yuki! I've been thinking about picking up one of those for myself.

cdrinfo has a review of the 7170A, but all they look at it is writing quality (gotta pimp that Datarius  ).

CD Freaks has a preview of the 7173A, which is essentially the 7170A with LabelFlash.

THX ^^ !!! I didn't know that Optiarc drives were going to be label as NEC in the US. It seems decent, epically for the price point new egg has it. Might be picking up 3 (one for myself, don't know what drive to replace though). It definitely looks better than the other 18x offerings. I was looking at LG and Samsung also but as for Samsung = mediatek i believe and LG support is horrible to find firmware.

if you had to pick would you replace an ND-3250a or a Pioneer 111 (non ram)

It will be a huge upgrade for my friends though, on is running a ND2500 I gave her (one of my old drives), the other friend is using a ND1300.

I'd replace the ND-3250A. The 111 is badass drive.

I looked at that review.

Seems typical as with all DVD+RW reviews,
the list the lack of Mt. Ranier support as a negative.

IIRC, I haven't seen one yet that does support such.

If so, why is that a negative, particularly in a comparative context?

I'm guilty of doing the same thing. I guess its more wishful thinking than anything.

I know that, Ian.
But I am such a sweet guy that I restrained myself from critcizing you in your reviews and waited for somebody else.

10-4? :)

Actually, it's understandable how that came to be.
Mount Ranier support was a reasonable criterion in rating CD-RW drives.
In the evolution to DVD writers, it would just be part of the natural progression to continue it's usage.

However, after reading a dozen of the first DVD writer reviews, I noticed that none of them had Mt. Ranier support and realized that it no longer had any significance.

Mt. Rainier was originally supposed to be built into Windows but Microsoft dropped the ball and it never made it in. Since you still need to install a packet writing program, it really doesn't give you many advantages, aside from automatic verification.

well the burner(s) came today from new egg, all three of them free shipping as it was offered on Monday when i ordered them.

Surprisingly the drive are fully listed as optiarc drive with both the sony and NEC name. Kinda of excited to see what the performance is like, will post pics of the drive in a bit. One of my wishes come true, Sony using an NEC mechanism with an NEC chip set !!! ^^. Newegg should list them as the opticarc drives.

any one know if this model uses the same optical sled and internal chip set / components as the AD-7173A and if it is possible to cross flash ? I ask so i can get disc labeling like on my old Yamaha.

I test some media on the AD 7173. With Sony DVD-R/+R 16x I´m disappointed, the 7173 let me choose 18x but dropped spped down to 16x, even before it reached 16x

I´m scanning now a HP +R 16x (MCC004), this look much better, but i´m still at 21%
