BenQ has been teasing us with the DW1800 for months now. The DW1680 is new to me though.

I thought BenQ was getting out of optical drives completely. Why release new models? :-?

They only officially quit from the European market, and unofficially quit the North American market. Japan however is another matter I believe.

LiteON is just handling manufacturing. The technology was all Philips to begin with. As long as LiteON isn't in charge of the firmware or technology aspects, they can make it just as good I think.

I've been testing a Lite-On LH-18A1P based drive and I've been pretty impressed so far. It's not quite up to old school BenQ standards but its a big improvement over Lite-On's earlier drives... at least with the media it supports. Media support is one area they need to work on.

Well if it's still a Nexperia chipset I'll be all over it if any show up...Otherwise forget it. I agree about LiteOn not writing the firmware but are any BenQ people left? The last few firmwares for the older BenQ's sure seemed like Litey cranked em out, poor update desciptions and maybe not quite as many or as good as the updates used to be.

is it better than the 6S drives in your opinion?

Does Hypertuning work on it?

I haven't tried the latest firmwares for the 6S drives, but I'd have to say that overall, it is a bit better, at least when it comes to writing quality. Media support though... only two media types work at 18x and a few 16x discs are limited to only 6x.

A few things I've noticed:

- When testing with the BenQ, the jitter rates are a bit lower than what I've seen on previous Lite-On drives

- With DVD+R discs, there are a bunch of spikes in the beginning. I'm guessing this is caused by some sort of write calibration.

Ian, the 1800 seems to be off an MTK chipset.

The firmware version ZB34 sounds like it is a Liteon LH-18A1P clone.

Yeah, if that's the case, its definitely an MTK chipset. I can't read Chinese, but it looks like someone in that thread says its based on the Lite-On LH-18A1P.
