Two Versions Of The LG GSA-H22N?

I've been testing the GSA-H22N and its performed as expected, except when writing at 18x. The writing times are impressive, but not as low as they should be. Looking at the screenshot below, you can see why. When it reaches the 3.7GB mark, the transfer rate starts to jump up and down and doesn't quite reach 18x.

Looking at CD Freaks' review of the drive (http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/LG-GSA- ... ology.html), you can see that the transfer rate is fairly normal.

What I happened to notice was that their drive supporte UDMA Mode 4 (ATA66). This is what it says in the manual too. My drive only supports UDMA Mode 2 (ATA33).

Looking at the date in InfoTool, CD Freaks' drive has a firmware from 06-08-05. The date on my drive is 06-07-10. Same firmware version, but a month different. wtf?

So the way I see it..

1. There are multiple versions of the 1.00 firmware. One supports UDMA 4 and one supports UDMA 2.

2. There are two versions of the drive. The ones manufactured earlier (mine is dated June) support UDMA 2 and newer ones (like CD Freaks, which is from September) support UDMA 4.

Thoughts? I'd also like to hear from other GSA-H22N owners to see when there's were made and if they support UDMA 4.

Interesting. I wonder if this could explain the discrepancy with the H22Ls as well? I'll try to get some time to look at the info on my H22L..

Mine has manufacturing date of August and supports UDMA 4.

I just bought this drive a couple of weeks ago. My drive has a manufacturing date of 06-08-05 and from the device manager, says that it is using Ultra DMA 4 as well. The firmware version is also 1.00.

My H22N comes with 1.00 ( 06-08-05 ). Supports UDMA4 ( ATA66 ).

I just notice that the burst speed of this drive is 28-30 MB/s in comparison of my other UDMA4 drives that had 40+ MB/s.

I tested the H22N into a firewire enclosure and the results are bad because the interface cannot sustain transfer rates over 12-14x.

An example of burn with H22N over a SATA adapter. No buffer underuns at all.

Ok, i had a h22n drive and it showed the same behaviour, it came with firmware version 1.00 and was udma 4 but whenever i burned mcc004 the device buffer would just go crazy towards the end of the disc even though the program buffer was perfectly full. However it would not happen when you burned "create data disc" using cdspeed. However if you used cpspeed or imagburn to write actual image to the disc then it would happen, even though the program buffer was full. This behaviour was also noticed on one of my newer liteon LH-18A1P drives, the other was perfectly fine and actually wrote with better quality. This behaviour i think happens because the wopc is too aggressive for some perticular drives. I think it's the drives that have not been caliberated or fine tuned to spec and when they write data to the disc, at high speeds the wopc algorithm just goes crazy and device buffer undderruns start happening.

That's a good point Sonny. In theory then, it shouldn't do this when simulating with DVD-R media.

I've been in contact with LG about this. Hopefully, its as simple as a firmware update.

Both drives H22N and H22L are long overdue for a firmware update as both of them don't support alot of the 16x dvd media that's out there and default to writing it at 4x speed.

I totally agree about the firmware updates.. I wasn't happy with my H22L but figured LG would have a firmware update out fairly quick (they seem good about getting 2-3 updates out fairly soon although they seem to drop support fast; thankfully they usually get it right -- look at the 4163 and 4167).

But now they haven't even released one. The H10L only got 1 update and it got pulled from the website after a few days. I'm just happy the H10L with LL11 firmware rocks. But what is going on with LG? Too many models without even trying to take any of them out of "beta" it seems like. :P

yeah, they're sprouting out new models at the rate at which they should be releasing firmware updates, and vice versa! :o #-o

Is 1.01 just for you for testing, or is it out yet officially?

Any word of a 1.01 for H22L's?

The 1.01 firmware is available for download in the Subscriber section of the forum. If LG doesn't post it on their website, I'll make it available to everyone in a couple of days.

I asked about the H22L but haven't heard anything yet.

Hi all.

Im new here and may i say i see allot of known faces around that i have seen or met around the web. Just trying to extend my knowledge here as we all are.

This is great news about the 1.01 firmware for the H22N. I own the H22L and think that it needs an upgrade just as much as the "N" did. I also own the H12N but i can live with the UJ12 firmware for that, just dont like the 1.00 for the H22L. The drive dose not like -R format. Unlike the H12N.

So my point is if any news on a H22L firmware is heard i would love to know. Thanks all.

See you around the forum. !! =D>

Ian, please
