I have a benq dw-1640 This is a great drive and I would like to replace it with another benq drive. I was wondering why they don't sell them in the US any more?

Maybe u can get there still a Benq 1650 or 1655?

I´m not sure how good the 18x and 20x Benq-drives are, they maybe rebadged Liteon

As a whole, BenQ was doing quite well a few years ago. Unfortunately, they extended themselves a bit too much by getting into markets they had no business being in (cell phones, etc). These failed business ventures caused them to lose money like crazy. To recover, they've cut their losses, focusing on the asian market.

As it is, BenQ never had a huge retail presense in the US. Most of their drives were sold to OEM's or through the gray market.

for what it's worth, the reason BenQ was awesome was because of Philips' pushing them, because they OEM'd the drives for their own brand. Now Philips is doing the same with LiteON, so we may see some improvements from LiteON over their previous products. For instance, LiteON's BluRay burner is 100% Philips design

spoiled with benq dw-1640

I have been trying to find a drive that is as reliable and durable as the benq dw-1640. the dw-1655 (lightscribe) and the dw-1650 are hard to find. can anybody suggest another drive that is reliable and has good reviews like the benq dw-1640.

thanks

I like the Pioneer DVR-111D personally, it's my favourite drive after the DW1640.

so a review will be forthcoming? great.

Ian, i know this is a bit unusal (and maybe has no place in a review), but when you do review it, i would like to know what you think of it as a scanner drive. esp. compared with older Lite-On drives such as the 160/165P6S.

i'm thinking of getting Lite-On whose primary function will be a scanning drive.

Yeah, I already have an engineering sample from Lite-On but I wanted the whole retail kit.

I'll post some scanning comparisons when I get some time... which will probably be next week some time.

Sadly, these 20x writers only support two types at this speed... both from Taiyo Yuden.
