CD-DVD Speed 4.7.0.0 and Samsung SH-S182M

I recently downloaded the latest version of CD-DVD speed, interested in the Disc Quality tests it can run.

For some reason, I had a lot of trouble getting my Samsung SH-S182M to be able to run the Disc Quality test - to begin with, the "start" button was greyed out.

I'm not entirely sure what I did that enabled the test - it seemed to me to involve me running the test first on my other burner, but anyway, I did get it to work and ran eight tests with various discs.

Now for some reason the "start" button is greyed out again, and I can't run the test. Anybody know why, and how to get around it?I'm using the latest S03 firmware.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

For some reason the author of CD Speed blocked write quality testing for Samsung drives. You can get it to work but you have to edit the registry. Open up regedit and go to:

Code: Select all
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ahead\Nero Toolkit\CD Speed\CD Quality]
"Blocked"="SAMSUNG,TSST,HL-DT-ST,PLEXTOR"

Delete SAMSUNG and TSST and launch CD Speed again. It should work now.

Thanks again, Ian!

It worked perfectly!

I see that Plextor and LG are blocked too..Does anybody know why?

Can it measure jitter and PO failures?

well, almost perfectly!

Whereas previously, the disc quality tests showed jitter and PO failures, now there is just a dash to the right of "Average" and "Maximum" jitter, and to the right of "PO failures". There is no jitter line on the lower graph.

I note that the CD DVD Speed manual gives speed recommendations for various drives for the Disc Quality test - what would be appropriate for the Samsung?

Again, any help much appreciated!

LG drives don't support scanning at all.

Plextor drives support scanning (with e.g. PlexTools), but Plextor has requested (demanded?) that CDSpeed shouldn't support Plextor drives. Even if you remove the "PLEXTOR" string from that registry entry, CDSpeed would still not scan (correctly) on Plextor drives.

I don't scan with Samsung drives so I really don't know what's up. At least with Lite-On drives, you need to scan at 4x if you want to see Jitter results.

Samsung drives don't report jitter and POF.

is this another feature written into CDSpeed at Plextor's "request" to ensure it wouldn't work on Plextor drives ?

shucks, to think Plextor would go to this lengths to make sure people use only PlexTools...
my resolve never to buy Plextor products again gets stronger and stronger.
and to think i was a Plextor Fan :o

Even if Eric wanted to add support to CD Speed he couldn't, at least with the 755 and 760 series of drives. If I remember right, Plextor now has stuff in the firmware of their drives, preventing them from working with anything other than their own software.

i can't decide if that's even worse that what i had suggested or not.

well, i'm still very fond of my 2 Plextor units - 24x and 40x CD burners. but they'll be the last Plextor drives i'll own.

Hi Carl

that's what I would have figured if I hadn't initially been able to do this:

Although the test results look pretty horrible, with something bad happening at the end, there are values for jitter and PO failures.

After a few successful disc quality scans, however, I was no longer able to get them to work. Following Ian's advice about the registry fix sorted it out, but then running tests on the same disk again gave this:

I was beginning to think that perhaps there was something built in that only allowed for say 10 scans before disabling it, so I tried flashing the original S02 firmware - same results - flashing back up to S03 - same. I just can't get it to do what it did before.

Mind you, looking at the results of the original scans with jitter, they didn't paint a very good picture of the Samsung drive!

Just to rule out any thoughts of foul play, I'm not a dab hand at photoshop, and haven't doctored any of the png images!

I'll be opening some HP 16x disks pretty soon, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they behave.

Ability to read protected media

Oh, I forgot to mention one further puzzling effect. Before the drive ceased to be able to run the CD-DVD Speed 4.7.0.0. Disc Quality test, it was also capable of running the test with protected content, as shown by the image below - a single layer pressed DVD.

After doing the registry tweak, I was not able to run the test with that disc.

Well I don't have a clue. I have never been able to get jitter/POF reporting from the 182D. I could try other firmwares but for now I am not at home. The chipset is capable of jitter reporting but I have never seen it work on the 182 series drives. Could be that it needs to be handled by the firmware.

No, I don't think so.

CDSpeed could originally scan CD media on Plextor CD-RW drives IIRC and then the Plextor support was removed by request/demand.

If you remove the PLEXTOR string from the relevant registry key, you will be able to scan CD media on some Plextor drives including the PX-712, but the C1/C2 are not reported correctly (no C1 and non-standard unit for C2 IIRC).

CDSpeed doesn't implement the necessary interface for scanning DVD media on Plextor drives, and as Ian mentioned, the scanning commands are now also "protected" with a challenge-response system in firmware for the PX-760 and PX-755 (perhaps also the Premium2 ?).

Try playing just a few seconds of the disc with a DVD player application on your PC (e.g. PowerDVD, WinDVD) so that CSS decryption is started. Then try scanning the disc again in CDSpeed.

Thanks, DrageMester - your suggestion worked! Now I can fill even more of my time running disc quality checks!
