Any guesses as to who the real manufacturer is? At first I thought it might be Lite-On but after looking at the bezel more closely, I think its based on a Sony NEC Optiarc design.

Yes, I think the same.

Maybe Plextor release some interesting features and maybe the drive works with Plextools?

Yeah, this makes me think so.

In addition, the drive comes with a software package which suits all user requirements. It includes Nero 7 Essentials OEM suite (including Nero Express 7), and Plextools Professional LE which offers more features and options for advanced users.

The Optiarc-drives are not so bad, with interesting features and a good price maybe a good drive :)

Well, if anyone could deliver interesting features, it sure would be Plextor, but Plextor and "good price" even in the same sentence? Don't make me laugh too hard.

I don´t think they cheap like the original-Optiarc, but if it´s not much more expensive than Optiarc and deliver good features it´s worth to buy, IMHO ;)

In Europe, the collect & return fast warranty is a "good feature".

Code: Select all
Warranty :
- 2 year Fast Warranty Service (in EU, Norway and Switzerland: Collect & Return)
- 1 year in other countries

Honestly, I don't see the point in buying a Plextor that isn't a real Plextor.

Plextors last products wasn´t that good, so a NEC-drive with Plextor-FW and software are maybe better in some points than original Plextors

712A, 755A and 760A were great drives. The 716 series was somewhat problematic. I like the Plextor-only features like GigaRec and AutoStrategy, and being able to use the full range of functions in PlexTools.

712 was not a great drive as I remember :o ... 716 was far better, after a real bad start.

The best Plextor to me is the PX-740 (when crossflashed to BenQ DW1640  )

Couldn´t agree :-?

Plextor looked very good with the most expensive media and DL, but many defect drives (in Germany for sure, and also in other countries) and not very good quality with many cheaper and mid-pricest media

I agree, the PX-716SA has been a great drive to me. I just waited until all the problems with the hardware revisions had been taken care of

Agreed on the Sony/NEC/OptiArc design.

I'm interested in waiting to see what Buffalo Tech's new drive looks like (SATA, but based off of Pioneer 212 tech, from what I've heard). My preliminary feelings are a mixed bag: I like the hardware (or at least the concept of it), but it will have to be good right out of the gate, as I've not been impressed with Buffalo's level of support on our Terastation Pro NAS boxes and don't trust them for long-term firmware support.

Can we get any more company names involved? Plextor, LiteOn, Sony, NEC, Optiarc...

Nice find on the NEC bezel. Now let's wait 6 months for Plextor USA to "announce" this drive and officially acknowledge it. :-?

Here's a better picture of the bezel that I borrowed from PC Watch. Definitely an NEC.

Yes, should be a NEC. Let´s see what Plextor can do with this hardware and Plextools
