Doh, was that a slight against NEC drive owners? I still have an ND-3550A and I like it, very reliable. I'll check out this new firmware and see what kind of results I get.

Not at all. They just don't seem to be very popular these days.

I miss voting for the ND-3550A in the DVD Writer Poll.

I don´t think the 3550 is very popular. Most ppl who want a NEC take a 7170 or 7173

I got rid of my 4550/4551 after all the controversy and bad firmwares were posted for it. When things like that happen it kinda takes the fun outa it. I doubt I'll get another NEC, though my 3500 and especially my 2500 should be gold plated.

I agree! The 2500 and 3500 are still legendary in my book for their exemplary burning quality skills! Time to Gold spray paint the front bezel?

Thats not a bad idea, I know a bunch of optical geeks agree, in fact I think you got one after I posted some scans from the 2500 I have I gave the 3500 to a coworker that was leaving to get married, but I still have that 2500.

I think my old 2500 might be at my uncles' house. I might have to go rescue it from him!

I gave my NEC 2500 to a friend, but I bought one brand new in the form of a Verbatim External DVD Writer a little while ago for $19 CAD. Not bad for a brand new NEC 2500 in a USB 2.0/Firewire external enclosure

If you don,t care about speed that drive was one of the best I ever used for burning any crap media at 8x with great results, then Herrie added the DL functions so I did one of the first DL burns with mine, disks still work. Paying 30 bucks for 1 verbatim 2.4 with a bunch of 8x regular disk wasn't so fun though They called it the DL solution kit.
