LG GSA-H54N and GSA-H54L - 2 more drives with SecurDisc

I was looking up some info on the GSA-H62N and noticed that NCIX had a new drive, the GSA-H54N, in stock.
According to LG Canada's website, the GSA-H54N and GSA-H55L are very similar to the GSA-H55 series.. except that they write at only 18x.

Oddly enough, these drives seem to only be available in Canada so far. What's that about, eh hosers?

A better question would be, what the heck is LG doing with all these drive models? It's becoming a MAJOR pain in the ass!!

it's possible. More likely though, they're the same as the 55 series.. just with their writing speed limited to 18x.

Amen to that... I think LG is making some outstanding drives... and I know they have some OEM deals, but man... they put out a new model drive each week it seems. It would be better just to do a little firmware support to add features or reduce them for OEM's. It frustrates me too!!! I've got a H12N and H22N... they work fine now and I could care less about 20x burning... I don't burn faster than 16x and often stick to 12x.... And SecurDisc, please!!! I'm not tossing my current drive in a landfill for that! Personally, I think that is going to flop.

Someone really needs to come up with a spreadsheet as to model/chipset/features. Or LG needs to go back to a more normal series numbers... seems like they broke the "even number=Panasonic, odd number=Renesas" chipset rules.

I don't really know of any company that has been good at divulging and listing all of their model numbers and variations in an organized and easily accessible location. There are always a ton of strange OEM model numbers or models specific to a certain country or customer (like NEC drives and Dell). And then sometimes we see different model numbers for retail versions vs barebones versions, what a mess!

Just an update to the burner, I have not tried CD burning just yet, but from the DVD-R tests i have done, the burner has been doing a very commendable job. PIE's under 10, PIF's are averaging around 0.05-0.15 with spikes being isolated cases, and not large mountainous jumps. Jitter is also averaging 8-9 % only.
So far its been doing good against the crappy Maxell and Memorex I have fed it.

Really I'm completely sick of this behaivour with DVD technology. They can't make any money on it anymore, so they just keep releasing cheap gimmick drive after cheap gimmick drive, and never think about firmware or proper media support. I have a BenQ DW1640, and a Lite-On 1635S, and a Pioneer DVR-111D, LG GSA-H22L, and a PX-716SA. I don't think there will ever be a drive worthy of adding to this combo, or replacing a drive in this combo.
BenQ DW1640 and Lite-On 1635S for burning questionable or B Grade discs
Pioneer DVR-111D for DVD±RDLs
Pioneer DVR-111D and Plextor PX-716SA for good quality DVDRs and CD-Rs
LG GSA-H22L for Lightscribe and DVD-RAM
Plextor, Lite-On, and BenQ for media testing
I can't imagine anything more that I'd need. Even disc copying can be done nicely by the Plextor and Pioneer models usually.
