I don't knwo if anyone else has had this problem or do you think it is a defective device? any help would be great i'd love to start burning soon and don't know what direction to go in. my email is removedbymod@gmail.com and my username on AIM is jayrodatbeach. thank you

I think it is a defective drive. Also, use the forum... don't ask to be e-mailed for a solution... posting your e-mail in a public forum is like asking to be spammed. You might want to edit that out.

This seems to be a common trend with the 212.

Overall, I am very happy with my replaced DVR-212D, and since this is my first time trying a Pioneer burner, I am not at all impressed with their QC and will look at something else before I purchase my next drive. When May's burner poll comes up this month, my vote is going back to an LG drive.

so i guess i should just return it and buy a new drive. any suggestions? i read a bunch of forums ( http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=23258 ) before i bought this and they said it was a great dvd drive. i'm looking for good read performance but still have the ability to write fast. but mainly the read speed is what i'm lookin for. any suggestions would be great. i'm sending this back to the person i bought it from through ebay. they said it was new and i looked at the screw holes and they had never had screws through them so it must have been a defect. you all seem to know a lot about dvd drives let me know which one i should buy, it would be great!
thank you for the help.

Can you try it with Windows XP or Kubuntu?

Why do you not think that it might be a Vista issue?

i'm not sure what the issue is all i know is that it doesn't work. i was just thinking that it could be one of many problems but what it comes down to is that it just doesnt' work. i've tried upgrading the firmware but i tcan't find the drive and i've tried reinstalling it with different drivers. pretty much eveything. so i 'm just gonna get a new one. any suggestions would be great you all know much more about this then i do so let me know what i should get i'm gonna get around a 80 dollar credit on this return. thanks also what is
kubuntu
thnks.

Kubuntu is a Linux distro.

The Pioneer is a good drive if you can get a working one... but I see that LG has a SATA drive now, the GSA-H62L, available at Best Buy. I am pretty fond of LG drives... might be worth the exchange.

Problem with pioneer 212

I had a similar problem with my 212 in Vista until I set the dvd region for the drive in device manager. Autoplay didn't work, Nero couldn't detect a disc in the drive, etc. Since I set the region it works fine.

Try that before you return the drive as defective...

yeah i tried that set it for region 1 and it still hasn't worked. The computer appears to see the drive and all the info about it but still doesn't read any discs whatsoever. thanks for the info though appreciate it.

So you have another system you could test the drive in? That could eliminate or confirm a system specific issue...
