I have been a diehard Lite-On fan since the early-mid 90's. But with their resent decline and withdrawal from a lot of markets I know why you're switching. After much research and now personal experience I have found the best replacement for the good old bang-for-buck entheusiest Lite-on is now Samsung. They make excellant products for the money (or for any money really, besides Plextor). They are also one of the biggest OEM guys now too (for Sony, TDK, Toshiba, etc.) so a lot of good drives are actually Samsung rebadges. Overall they are the new Lite-On if there ever was one. Check them out.

I´m not sure whether Samsung is better than Liteon. Maybe Samsung is much more quiet, but not better in writing-quality.

Maybe the Asus with MTK-chipsets could be very interesting for Ex-Liteon-Users

Samsung has been hit and miss for me. They work well with some media but with others the writing quality is garbage. The fact that they read CD-R discs at only 40x irritates me as well.

In the past Samsung had probs with many DVD-R, so it´s not my first choice

And Ian, do u think that Samsung is better than Liteon?

Ah yeah.. I forgot about the leadin issues they have with DVD-R media. You'd think with the number of firmware updates they put out they could fix this.

Since Lite-On has purchased BenQ Optical Drives Devision, if you can find previous BenQ drives (1620, 1640,1650 or 1655) that would be a good replacement.
