CDRLabs DVD Writer Poll - July

Vote for what you think is the best, all around DVD writer. By doing so, you'll hopefully help those looking to buy a new drive. Once again, I tried to chose original drive designs that are currently available or will be soon.

Feel free to leave comments and an explanation as to why you voted the way you did. Also, if there's a drive you'd like to see added to the poll, let me know.

For reference, here's the top drives from June's poll:

1. Pioneer DVR-111/DVR-111D/DVR-A11
2. Pioneer DVR-112/DVR-112D/DVR-A12
3. (tied) LG GSA-H62N/L and Plextor PX-760A/SA
4. (tied) Lite-On LH-20A1H/LH-20A1P/LH-20A1S and LG GSA-H22N/L

I thought about adding the ASUS DRW-2014L1T and Lite-On DH-20A3 series to this month's poll but I can't find them for sale anywhere yet.

I voted for the LG H62, a good and fastburner

My vote goes to Asus 1814. Not the fastest but it looks like a good and reliable burner

BTW, a 2014 is on the way? Can´t found some info for that writer

ASUS had it on display at Computex. It's not on their website yet, but if you google DRW-2014L1T you'll find a bunch of Chinese websites with it for sale. As far as I can tell, its nothing more than a DRW-1814BLT with 20x writing speeds.

NCIX has the SH-S203B for sale:

Wow.. where'd the votes for the GSA-H62N come from? It's actually beating the Pioneer 112.

I got an H62N... great DVD burner, but it compliments my Pioneer DVR-212D... I think Pioneer is past their early problems with the 112/212 series drives so we may see them boost next month given they get better firmware support than the LG's (and a hopeful forthcoming ability to crossflash the Pioneers with Buffalo firmware to add booktyping and DVD-RAM support... well for the 212 anyway... the 112 already has it).

Hey Ian & SithTracy,
Do you really think that the Plextor PX-760A is really worth buying from www.micro-center.com for the $119.99 price tag?I mean what's so special besides the plex-tools?Besides,that is something that I know completely nothing about.I know nothing about scanning either!

I just burn and rip;that's all that I know.LOL..................................
Should,I send the $119.99 for the Plextor PX-760A or just buying something cheaper?I'am go from your advise on this matter!

Clint,

While I own a couple of Plextors (PX-716A and PX-755SA), I gotta say, knowing that they ceased making their own drives, I gotta believe firmware development and bug fixed to PlexTools is nearing the end. If I was coming into the possibility of being a Plextor owner today, I would probably not. The recent LG drives do a great job burning DVD+R media and the Pioneer is an excellent DVD ripper and CD-Burner as well as doing an outstanding job at burning DVD-R and DVD+R DL media. I'd be better off buying two of those... and if I was like you and had a LITE-ON to do media scanning (if you are interested in it), and had three drive bays... those are the three I would be happy with.

Just my two cents. It's ultimately up to you to decide.... and one of the thing is like about this forum is your going to get more input for various people and their arguments will be valid. It will certainly give you something to think about.

Best of luck,

Sith

With all the problems the Pioneer DVR-112 is having lately, I'm glad to see it's not making it too far on this list.

Well, I don't know all the details yet... but a lot of DVR-112's seem to be developing blank media recognition problems, followed eventually by complete death. I don't know if death always follows blank media recognition problems, and I don't know if it's solveable via firmware. I *DO* know it's being looked into by Pioneer though. I finally found a roundabout way to get some reports in via a friendly striped horselike aussie. On the bright side, I haven't seen any reports of problems with the DVR-212, and there have been some suggestions pointing to the DVR-212 not being as badly affected, or not being affected at all. But really, right now a lot of things are still in question so it's hard to say anything 100% for sure.

Ah yes, I believe I saw aforementioned Aussie's thread regarding the issue as well.

Oh well, drive has reached Bombay, should be getting it installed over the weekend. Will post some scans.. I have some Yudens and Verbatims itching for a spin.. both on the Pio and my new 1655 :D

My 112D has burned and scanned 127 DVD's to date (total of 254 "spins", that's how many write graphs I have saved for it anyway), plus however many discs read. While that's not a large number, it's showing zero signs of slowing down. A great drive, I'll take it over a 111 any day.

Glad to hear you're not having problems! :)

I wish I knew more people with your luck :(
