Best DVD Writer for Ripping DVDs?

Hi all,

I'm looking for a SATA-based DVD writer drive that has fast DVD ripping speeds. A lot of drives seem to be riplocked, or rip single-layer DVD-videos quickly. But, these drives suffer when reading dual-layer DVD-videos. I'm aware that, due to technical limitations, most drives have to slow down to read the second layer.

However, I'm looking for recommendations on a DVD writer SATA drive that can rip DVDs quickly. I'm hoping to archive my DVD collection!

Thanks :)

I don't know of any that will rip dual layer DVD's at 16x but the Lite-On LH-20A1L and Samsung SH-S203B both rip at 12x.

Yep, I saw that the Lite-On LH-20A1S (which I assume is similar to the model you mentioned) could rip single-layer DVDs at a max of 16x, with an avg speed of 12x. It also ripped dual-layer DVDs at a max of 12x with an avg speed of 9x:

I wonder if this is the best there is right now. Certainly there are other drives that rip dual-layer DVDs slower. I haven't seen any faster.

If you're going to use it primarily for ripping, it will probably due the trick. However, I've been less than impressed by the writing quality of the LH-20A1S and LH-20A1L.

The Pioneer DVR-212D is a good ripper too, but my first choice would have to be the Samsung SH-S203B.
