Recommendations?

This past weekend I tried to install Windows Vista on my parent's PC. Unfortunately, the disc would not read - I tried the disc on other systems in the house, and they all read it fine. This seems to indicate the the DVD-ROM drive installed doesn't like the disc. The DVD-ROM is a five-year old Pioneer DVD-500M.

This means it time for a new drive. While I'm at it, I might as well upgrade my folks to a burner. I see the new drives use SATA, but I don't think their system has that capability, nor do I want to go screwing around with that at this point. Ideally, I'd just like to remove the old ATAPI/IDE drive, and stick a new one in it's place. My own system has a Benq DQ60, which has served me quite well.

I don't necessarily think my parents need Lightscribe (a nice feature, but they could probably live without it) , but I'd like to get them a drive that is quiet, but reads fast. Also one that supports the most possible DVD-formats. Any recommendations? Let me thank everyone ahead of time for your ideas.

It sounds like your parents don't need the latest and greatest but if you want to go that route, you can't go wrong with the Pioneer DVR-112 or one of Samsung's new 20x DVD writers.

Otherwise, check our monthly polls to see what others are recommending.

Thank you, again, for the recommendations. I'll take a look at the DVR-112.
