CDRLabs kicks off the week with a review of Plextor's new external 18x DVD writer, the "TurboPlex" PX-810UF. Based on the LG GSA-H44N, the PX-810UF is capable of 18x DVD±R, 10x DVD±R DL, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW and 12x DVD-RAM writing speeds and a maximum DVD read speed of 16x. Plextor's new drive also features 48x CD reading and writing speeds, 32x rewriting speeds and support for both FireWire and USB 2.0.

In this review we'll take a look at some of the features found on the PX-810UF and see how it compares to some of the 18x DVD±RW drives from the competition. Does Plextor's external writer have what it takes? You'll have to read the review to find out.

Nice review :)

I don´t read the first page, so I miss that it´s based on the LG H44, I thought it´s a Pioneer.

But then I saw 48x CD and the bad write quality with Ricoh R03 and I thought uhm, looks like a LG.

Seems like Plextor tweaked the FW in some points, the H44 dont support 12x DVD-R and uses 48x Z-CLV (I guess)

Overall, it´s a nice package but to expensive. I bought for some guys 2 LG H40 for 49 €/piece

Yeah, the PX-810SA is a Pioneer. This one is an LG.

Someone emailed me over the weekend, asking if the PX-810UF can really write at 12x. As promised, I've posted a few screenshots.

The LGs also can write 12x, but not to DVD-R

Hmm.. I'll have to check that. I'm pretty sure it writes to both at 12x.

You're right. I'll have to update the review.
