Pioneer DVR-A15J - PURE READ and PowerRead Technologies

As usual, Pioneer is sticking it to those of us outside of Japan. Normally, I wouldn't care, but the DVR-A15J is getting two technologies not found on Pioneer's standard 20x DVD writers.

http://pioneer.jp/press/release610-j.html

Rough translations:

PowerRead function

Fingerprint scratched the dirt with a DVD disc and write bad quality DVD discs can be played back even raise the possibility "PowerRead" function.

VIDEO - DVD titles, DVD-Video format, DVD-VR format recorded DVD disc recording by the effect that all DVD disc for playback that is not guaranteed. Also, the state of DVD disks, depending on the image in blocking noise, the sound of the voice is not able to fly. PowerRead feature is the support and drive supports DVD player software is required.

Essentially, if your DVD has a spot that the drive can't read, it skips it and moves on.

"PURE READ (original sound reproduction)" function that the voice data can be read more faithfully when audio CD reproduces is installed.

A usual DVD/CD writer calculates the data from data when a part of data cannot about be read due to dirt and wound, etc. on the surface of the disk when audio CD reproduces, and the supplementation method is adopted.

However, completely supplementing the music signal to which the volume and tone quality were always changeable from the data of the back and forth also has what where the change and the noise of tone quality are difficultly generated a lot.

Pioneer's "PURE READ (original sound reproduction)" retries at high speed while changing the parameter at the time of reading depending on an original algorithm (Go for reading again in the data that was not able to be read). As a result, suppressing the incidence of the lack and the supplementation with data, and reading the music data of audio CD more faithfully became possible.

PURE READ is probably the more impressive of the two as it tries to read and recover a damaged sector on an audio CD in an attempt to deliver the best quality.

The drive isn't cheap. AV Watch expects it to cost about 10,000 Yen, or $91.

$91 for a *GOOD* drive doesn't sound like a bad deal to me. Really people need to learn that if a company can't make money, they aren't going to try to make a good product. Look at what happend to BenQ.... they had a great product, but tried to compete with Samsung and Lite-On, and now they have nothing... they *ARE* Lite-On :o

That's the exact reason why they aren't selling them outside of Japan anymore. People in the US would rather spend $30 on some POS that won't last through the warranty than $90 on a high quality drive.

What a pity, I would also spend a bit more money for better quality :o

I'm wondering what happened to DVD-RAM write support in the 115 series? There's no DVR-115 drive announced (without the "D")!?

I wonder how much can be turned on using firmware crossflashing techniques?

MCSE already announced support for enabling DVD+R SL bitsetting in all firmware DVR-109 through 115, so that takes care of that usual problem. The DVR-215D should be able to turn on the DVD-RAM writing with a crossflash from the 215. I bet labelflash could be enabled on all the drives as well. Then the question would remain if the DVR-A15J has any additional hardware to support those two technologies. I'm thinking that it does if it's selling for $90+.

According to this: http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/News/De ... wsId=21882

"new DVR-115D (DVR-A15J for Japan)"

"The drive will retail in Japan in the end of the month, under the code name DVR-A15J. USA, Taiwan, China and Australia markets will be selling the same drive as a retail model in around January 2008. For the European territiory, Pioneer will offer the following rane line-up (bulk models):

And it mentions the PURE READ and POWER READ features... so hopefully all the models will include it!

EDIT: And according to this site:

http://homepage2.nifty.com/yss/s12j/s12j_top.htm
The DVR-S12J/DVR-212L already has PURE READ... or maybe the DVR-212L can be cross-flashed.... ?

I guess we will have to wait for the drive or for Pioneer to make a press-release... or someone could contact them.

EDIT^2: If you can translate: http://itbbs.pcshow.net/redirect.php?fi ... nextoldset

mentions DVR-115 and PURE READ

I think they're pulling the bit about the DVR-A15 being available in the US out of their ass. We haven't seen an "A" version in years. Also, the European press release mentitoned nothing about PURE READ or PowerRead.

That's interesting that PURE READ is available on the DVR-A12. So much for it being a new feature.

I was skimming threads at cdfreaks and they have a Pioneer Australia rep on there. One comment he made seems to suggest that the hardware exists in all the x15 drives for those features but he won't take questions. I leaning more towards a crossflash enabling these features.

I would buy an A15 if it were available too. Unfortunately we have to play the firmware game.

It will most likely be a crossflash, he also hangs out on Speedlabs and thats a mainly Australian board so you guys can check there also for info on the drive. He probably just doesn't want to get in hot water with Pioneer on the hugely trafficked like cd freaks is.
I would love to have a ax version just for the unique looking case and door, it sposed to be better then the 212 series so far but it's early on yet. I never got a 212 but my 111 has been good the few times I have used it, it's very good with DL media.

You could add the Quiet Drive technology found on the A08 and A09 to the 108 and 109 by cross flashing. I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case here too.

I really wish that Pioneer USA took the same amount of interest as Pioneer Australia or Pioneer Europe. :x

Still not much action on the dvr-115d front. Got mine with the old 1.06 firmware. The 1.13 in the wild cannot be downloaded.

Ah well, that's Pioneer support :)

I just bought and received my DVR-115D (OEM) earlier this week.
I bought it as a backup to my DVR-111D which I am very happy with.

Then again, depending on the burn quality, maybe I should start using the 115 and keep the 111 as my backup. :)
I haven't had any problems with my 111-burned discs though.

I, too, am hoping someone creates a firmware so that US 115 units can be cross-flashed.

Glad to be of service :)

Addition: DVR-115D -> DVR-115L using DVR-A15J success on my machine. Be sure you don't mix PATA and SATA firmwares and that proper flashing flags are used.
