ASUS announced two new 20x DVD writers today. The DRW-2014S1 and DRW-2014S1T appear to be nothing more than the DRW-2014L1/DRW-2014L1T minus LightScribe.

In order to provide users with increased data storage, ASUS, a leading provider of high-performance optical storage devices, today announced the new DRW-2014S1/S1T – an industry leading DVD rewriter that supports 14X DVD-RAM write, 20X DVD+/-R and 8X DVD+/-R dual layer media sources. It also features Over-speed Burning – a feature that saves users precious time.

Over-Speed Burning For Time-Savings
The ASUS DRW-2014S1/S1T features Over-speed Burning – a technology that is able to burn DL 2.4X discs at 8X speeds. Users need only need to spend 18 minutes rather than 47 minutes while waiting for data backups – a time savings of 29 minutes!

Double Layer Technology for Larger Storage Capabilities
With the popularity of digital multimedia entertainment on the rise, the demand for higher data storage quality and capacity to accommodate video and audio data is also increasing. The ASUS DRW-2014S1/S1T supports the latest double layer technology, which almost doubles the DVD+R storage capacity from 4.7GB to 8.5GB – providing up to four hours of DVD quality video archive capabilities. In addition, this new double layer technology provides full storage capacity that is achievable on one side of a single disc without the need to turn it over.

Versatility with Multiple Media Formats
Flexibility for a wide array of media formats is also very important. The ASUS DRW-2014S1/S1T offers both 20X DVD-Write and 20X DVD+Write, making it capable of reading from and writing on DVD-Write/ Rewrite and DVD+Write/ Rewrite formats. With dual-format adopting features, the DRW-2014S1/S1T is able to create DVDs that can be played and read by most DVD-ROM drives and DVD players. It also enables 14X DVD-RAM, 6X DVD-Rewrite, 8X DVD+Rewrite, 16X DVD-ROM single layer, 40X CD-R, 40X CD-RW and 48X CD-ROM capabilities – providing flexible and high-speed operations.

I don't think I'll be buying any more DVD drives that don't have some form of HD playback &/or burning abilities. And I still have a bad taste in my mouth from my first and possibly last ASUS drive investment, the 1814. Pioneer's 215/115 may tempt me, but only if the Power Read function is enabled on the NA versions.
