Pioneer Electronics sent me a DVR-116D last week (thanks Brian!). I was gone most of the weekend, but I was able to take a quick look at it. The drive is constructed surprisingly well. Unlike some of the new drives from Taiwan and Korea, it doesn't feel like its made out of tin foil.

The top of the drive has some interesting indentations. I'm guessing these are used to reduce noise.

I'm not sure why Pioneer insists on limiting the CD read/write speeds of their DVD writers to 40x. I guess they figure we already have decent CD writers.

Here are a few screenshots showing the DVR-116D's DVD writing performance. I'm not sure why it slowed when writing to Verbatim's DVD-R media. It was still pretty quick.
