Plextor has officially unveiled its new Qflix-enabled DVD writers. Along with the PX-806SA that we reported on awhile back, the company is introducing an external model, the PX-Q840U. The two drives support Plextor's new PlexUTILITIES software and are capable of 20x DVD±R, 8x DVD±R DL and 12x DVD-RAM writing speeds.

Wow, they're more expensive than I thought. Plextor wants $89.99 for the PX-806SA and $149.99 for the PX-Q840U.

Plextor’s PX-Q840U external retails for $149.99 and the PX-806SA internal retails for $89.99. Both drives are available for purchase now through distributors and retailers in North and South America.

Plextor doesn't seem to be putting firmware updates up on their website. Instead, you have to grab them via PlexUtilities. Here's the 1.08 firmware for the PX-Q840U for those that might need it.

There are some that are still fooled by the name... thinking they got a Plextor. I burn very little anymore and will never consider a rebadged Plextor no matter what benefits their software claims. PlexTools was always buggy in my eyes. I always had random crashes while using it.

I am prolonging the life of my PX-755SA by using it in a eSATA enclosure and powering it only when I need it (RARE). I got my PX-716A in my wife's PC since it is IDE as well as my BenQ DW1640... Kinda wish they were still around too.

Well, this could be. Some ppl still recommend Plextor because of it´s name. But Germany have a good forum for CD/DVD-burning and no one there will recommend a Plextor atm.

Plextools wasn´t so bad, but with the rebadged drives many functions are unavailable, so there is not a big reason for buy a Plextor

I've been playing around a bit with PlexUTILITIES on the PX-Q840U and its missing features found on the Lite-On drives. For example, there is no way to set the booktype and while SmartWrite is there, there is no way to manage it from within PlexUTILITIES. Instead of running around, trying to cover up the fact that their drives are made by Lite-On, Plextor should be giving us solid reasons to spend the extra $$$ for their drives.

I don´t think they give us reasons...

Or maybe the collect&return-Service?
