Need SATA DVD Writer Recommendations!

Finally building a new PC, and want the internals to all be high quality parts. As far as a DVD Writer, I'm just looking for the overall best - speed matters less than compatibility and great firmware. I'm more interested in SATA because of the cleaner cables, though if a PATA drive is *that* much better, I guess I could consider it as well.

What do you all think?

You might want to checkout the new Optiarc/Sony 7240, most folks are having great burns with it. It isn't absolutely perfect but they've only released one update for it so it should improve as they update it. Good dvd media works nice in it, a few mids actually do 24x with excellent quality and most will do at least rated speed very well.
The CD burning is still a bit rough and it doesn't Over speed older media almost at all but seems like a great start for a new burner thats very fast.
Ian has a mini thread on it and there are several over at Freaks if you want to check it out.

Agree, the Optiarc AD-7240S is not too shabby... but I still use the Samsung SH-S203B the most... of course you can't find those new anymore. The Optiarc seems to be shaping up to a be really good drive.

How are Lite-On's 24x DVD writers? I've been thinking about ordering one.

Well as far as I'm concerned it's a Lite On DVD burner and that's good enough for me to stay away. More then likely it still uses a mediatek chip instead of the better, I think, NEC.
I'm sure many will buy it and many will like it though so it might be worth your getting just to see how it does considering what we like to do here.
Are they sending you another 7240 to make up for the dying one you seem to have I hope?

Yeah. I'm not sure what the hold up is though.

Well lets hope you get it before they release 1.03... 8) Also hope your experience wont turn into a trend, mine seems to be doing OK so far though at least one other user has one he thinks is bad, it happens.

It's been listed on Pioneer's Chinese website for awhile. I see that Pioneer USA has it listed now too. Not a lot of info though.
