Millenniata revealed today that they've partnered with Hitachi-LG and that they will be manufacturing M-READY DVD drives which will be able to read the rock-like discs.

http://www.smallbusinesscomputing.com/n ... torage.htm

Together with the M-DISC announcement, Millenniata also announced a manufacturing and marketing partnership with Hitachi-LG Data Storage to manufacture M-DISC compatible DVD drives and market them through its sales channels. Under the partnership, Hitachi-LG will manufacture M-READY DVD drives and market and sell them to its U.S. and international retail channels under its DVD brands.

Shumway explained that within several months, all models manufactured by Hitachi-LG will be M-DISC compatible.

"There will be no price increase for this upgrade," he said. "They see this as a market differentiator. They've been looking at our technology for about a year and a half."

"Millenniata's technology has been tested and proven to provide long-lasting data storage," said Sang Hun Kim, deputy CMO of the sales and marketing division at Hitachi-LG Data Storage. "We are pleased to partner with Millenniata to provide true permanent storage DVD technology that can stand the test of time."

Shumway noted that Millenniata is currently working on the creation of a Blu-RAY version of its M-DISC technology, but is not yet ready to announce when that version of the technology will be available.

Despite what most new sources are saying, the M-DISC isn't that new. It's been around for a couple of years already. It's just that this is the first time we're seeing support from another company like LG.

Millenniata has three M-DISC compatible LG drives up for pre-order in its store:

http://store.millenniata.com/default.aspx

LG BE12LU30 External Blu-ray Disc Rewriter - $199.98

LG GH24LS70 Internal DVD Rewriter - $49.98

LG GP40LB10 Slim External DVD Rewriter - $74.98

The website says that all three will be available in Q4 of 2011... which is kind of odd considering you can purchase them elsewhere right now for A LOT less money. Maybe these have a special M-DISC firmware?

Looks like the discs are going to run about $3 a pop.

And if that's true why couldn't you pop the firmware on the other drive for sale cheaper with the same model number? Be interesting to see how it shakes out but I bet they are just hoping to lure early adopters.

LG has released some information on their new M-DISC drives.

http://www.lgsolutions.com/products/dig ... isc-drives

CP40NG10 - portable BD Combo

BP40NS20 - portable BD writer

GH22NS90 - 22x DVD writer

UH12LS29 - 12x BD Combo

WH12LS39 - 12x BD writer

The last two are very similar to LG's existing 12x BD drives. They all write to M-DISCs at 4x and most read them back at 8x. The only one that can read at 12x is the GH22NS90.

I won a DVD writer and a pack of discs through Millenniata's latest giveaway. I'll post a bunch of info as soon as I get it.

Millenniata finally tweeted me back. The prizes haven't shipped out yet. Something about a shipping issue with LG but they will go out this month some time.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited. I really haven't seen a lot of real technical info on the M-DISC stuff. I really hope it lives up to the hype.

I'm wondering that too. They keep saying its due to supply issues from LG. Kinda funny considering the drive is in stock on their website.

Ever get the phantom drive? I saw a short while back they were on sale at NewEgg... Was thinking about it but decided against it because I had not heard if you received your prize. Not going to invest in a product for a company that does not keep their end of a give-away/prize.

I'm supposed to be getting a shipping notice any day now.

According to their marketing guy, LG hasn't been able to get the products delivered on time. The tsunamis and what not have pushed back shipments of the high powered lasers these drives use.

I still find it odd that you can order M-DISC drives from any number of companies, including Amazon and Newegg, yet Milleniata, the company who developed the technology, can't get them.

I still use their GGW H20L combo HD DVD/BD burner here and doubt I've done more then 20 burns with it. Just got it so I could have both formats covered as I got a HD DVD player first when they went on for stupid prices just before they folded.
At least you finally got what they promised, maybe even better then you were hoping for =D>

From what I remember my LG BD burner doesn't do that well with DVD's either, my other variuos LG DVD burners were much better. Though none pf them got very many firmware updates.
All the BluRays I burned with it always played, provided the disk I used was still good as the included BD-RE disk made it about 5 burns then went bad and I thought the burner had died. #-o

I'm starting to think this batch of discs is bad. Different drive. Same spike at the 3.5GB mark.
